Foodborne illness is caused by ingesting food or beverages that are contaminated with some type of pathogen. While these cases are very rare, when they do occur they often impact large groups of people. Those people with underlying health issues that weaken their immune system typically have the most serious reactions. Other types of illnesses from food come from chemicals that are found on food. A familiar example is the pesticides that are sprayed on most of the fruits and vegetables that we eat. Finally, there are many cases of people that get sick from eating foods that they didn’t realize were harmful; certain types of mushrooms that grow in the wild are an example of this.
