Most of us spend a large portion of our adult lives married, about to be married, between marriages, separated or divorced. Most adults want to participate in the institution of marriage and many same-sex couples plead for the right to marry rather than be joined by in a civil union. Nothing in our education prepares us for the challenging roles of being a parent, a caregiver to our children and often-elderly parents, a love to our partner, and taking care of ourselves all at once. Our married lives can be further complicated in an inter-racial or mixed culture marriage. We negotiate prenuptial agreements or post nuptial agreements to prevent messy divorces. We are shocked when we discover our partner has been unfaithful or exhibits abusive behavior. We try to work out the issues through marriage counseling and communication workshops, but still around 50% of marriages results in divorce.
