Generally, what we call an unconventional marriage is rather a marriage that does not fit the traditional marriage stereotype. Unconventional marriages include loveless marriages, childless marriages, traditional role-reversal marriages, age disparity marriages, open marriages and polygamous marriages. Another unconventional marriage type might when one of the partners is much older. Examples of these unusual marriages would be the May to December couple of a young girl to much older man, or a cougar couple of a young man with a much older woman. Another unconventional marriage is a transgender marriage in which one partner has undergone gender reassignment surgery and the couple remains together as partners. It is not unusual for married couples to drift apart, yet remain married in a sexless or loveless relationship. Partners in an unconventional marriage take a lot of kidding, bullying and misunderstanding from friends and associates for staying true to their partners in these unusual relationships.
