Domestic abuse often accompanies alcohol abuse, drug usage and mental illness making treatment more difficult. Victims of domestic abuse are made to feel guilty for problems and setbacks experienced by the abuser making it very difficult for the victim of domestic abuse to leave the relationship. One type of physical domestic abuse occurs in couple of relationships when an argument sometimes fueled by drinking or drug use escalates into violence by one or both partners. This kind of situational couple violence is one of the most physically dangerous types of intimate partner violence and can be life threatening. Equally dangerous is emotional abuse. Emotional abuse is also called psychological abuse or mental abuse threatens the victim through intimidation, lack of self-worth. Victims of emotional abuse can become isolated from friends and family that might provide help. Emotional abusers often cut off or threaten to cut off financial resources and independence when the victim complains or reveals plans to leave.
