Orienteering tests the competitors skill in the ability to use the map and compass and generally be able to navigate the quickest way between two points. Each point in the course if marked by a flag and the competitors run from point to point. The most common scoring system is based on the fastest time to complete the course. Orienteering has its origins in the some of the training exercises conducted by the military.
