Wild card is the term that the league uses to describe the teams that did not win a division title, but had the next best record during the regular season. The playoffs consist of two preliminary rounds followed by the conference championship games. The winner of the AFC conference championship game then goes on to play the winner of the NFC conference championship game in the NFL championship game; which is better known as the Super Bowl.
