The presence of Americans in boxing has lessened in recent years as American athletes tend to participate in other sports that are more lucrative and less damaging to the body. Many of the athletes that might have been professional boxers in past years will now use their skills to get a college scholarship and in some cases go on to become professionals in sports such as baseball, football, and basketball. Many of the best boxers in recent years have come from Latin American countries where there are fewer options for the athletes.
