Its popularity spread in the 19th and 20th centuries when British soldiers stationed in India started engaging in matches. It became popular in other parts of the world as well, fueled by the efforts of the British. For those not familiar with polo, it involves players stationed on horses called “ponies.” The players carry mallets and the object is to hit a ball through designated areas. Think of it as similar to field hockey played while sitting on a horse. Polo fields are often as long as 300 yards.
