On a competitive level softball is typically considered to be a sport played by women. It is popular at the collegiate level and the best players in the world will play in the Olympic Games. One of the primary differences between recreational and competitive softball is the pitching. Recreational leagues typically toss the ball towards the batter while competitive softball involves fast pitching. Unlike baseball, the technique for fast pitch softball is to throw the ball underhand. It may be underhand, but it’s not tossing. Fast pitch softball is very fast. Most people who haven’t played competitive softball would be shocked at the speed of the pitching.
