For most amateur athletes, the most prestigious competition is the Olympic Games. The Olympics started in Greece in 776 BC. The Games continued for more than 300 years before they stopped. It would be more than 2000 years before the games would return in the form of the modern Olympics. At one time the Summer and Winter Games took place during the same year, but they are now staggered so every two year there is either a Summer or Winter Olympics.
