The history of the Olympics is one of great achievement and terrible tragedy. The Olympics started in Greece in 776 BC. The Games continued for more than 300 years before they stopped. Some of the great athletes include Mark Spitz, Eric Heiden, Nadia Comanici, Takashi Ono, and Paavo Nurmi. Unfortunately, the Olympics are sometimes remembered for tragedy. The attack on Israeli athletes during the 1972 Olympics in Munich stands out as the worst moment in the history of the games.
