Today, cable TV’s main competition is not from free broadcast television, but from satellite television, which is another paid option. Cable television offers hundreds of channels and allows users to customize their viewing options to receive the programming that they enjoy. Recent years have seen the growth of pay per view options which allow the user to “rent” programs in a way similar to video stores; but without leaving home. These options have proved popular and are sure to grow in the future. Many people are predicting that the next great innovation in television is interactivity. Some cable networks are already experimenting with allowing viewers to make decisions as to what is shown.
