Like so much of the jargon of the web, the word browser had an entirely different meaning until just a few years ago. While we used to browse at the store, there is no confusion over what is meant when we hear the word today. The … Keep Reading → first of the major browsers that made it easy for the average person to navigate the web was Netscape; actually it was called Mosaic but later renamed Netscape. As recently as the mid 1990’s Netscape had a virtual stranglehold on the browser market. There was no serious competition until Microsoft started including its Internet Explorer as part of its operating system. Since virtually all computers used the Microsoft operating system, this was the beginning of the end for Netscape. In 2003 and 2004 Apple and Mozilla released Safari and Firefox respectively. 2008 brought additional competition in the form of Google Chrome. Microsoft still dominates the market for browsers, but there are other legitimate choices.
