For businesses the networks can be considerably more complicated. Typical internet connections are open lines between the end user and the outside world. The communication goes both ways so those with the know-how can hack into your computers through the same network that you reach out through. The firewall is either a piece of equipment or software program that analyzes all incoming requests and determines if they are suspicious. If they are considered dangerous, the request for access to your system is denied. Firewalls can operate based on pre-set configurations or they can be customized by the end user.
