My Second Visit To Puerto Rico

This is my second visit to Puerto Rico. I love this place! I have been living in a Bed And Breakfast owned by a lovely young lady named Josmary. I did a lot of research on the Internet to find a place to rent here. I intended to stay in Puerto Rico for three months. I wanted a place that was comfortable and within walking distance to stores. Her place has been perfect for me. There is a movie theater about a block away which I have enjoyed.

Some Of The Reasons I Love Puerto Rico

The weather: average year round is 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Very few homes have airconditioning, including where I am staying. There is always a nice breeze coming through the windows. At this time of year it doesn't rain too often. Sometimes we get a litte shower in the early morning, but by the time we load up our rental car to go off to a big adventure for the day the sun will come out, and it will be a beautiful day after all.

The Time: Atlantic Standard. Never have to set your clocks back and forth! I like that. I don't know why the United States can't do that. I get so tired of setting my clocks and appliances forward and back.

They use U. S. Currency. That’s a BIG plus for me. When I went to Costa Rica that was a big minus for me. I never did learn their monetary system. I felt lilke I was paying $25.00 for a hamburger there because of the money exchange.

The language: Spanish and English. I don’t speak Spanish, , but that has not been a big problem because most of the people speak both languages. It was a little bit of a challenge when we rented a car. We couldn't read the road signs. We just had to guess at it. Their main highways are like our interstates They are in very good condition. They do have a lot of toll roads: maybe that's why the main roads are in such good repair.

The streets in San Juan are in very good condition. There are no potholes. When you walk on their sidewalks, you don't have to watch out for cracks or holes. I couldn't help but notice the late model white vans that are taxis parked all along the street waiting for a fare. I asked a driver about that, and he told me that they have to renew their licenses every two years and upgrade their cabs. No beat up yellow cabs here.

The people are very polite. Cashiers in the stores always greet you with a smile, then they say "thank you" or "gracias" when they finish ringing up your purchase.

The women are quite beautiful. When they go shopping (even for groceries) they dress in nice fitting Jeans, with high heeled shoes. I saw two mothers pushing their babies in strollers in the Mall one day. They wore tight jeans and four inch heels!

Clean Streets Of San Juan, Puerto Rico

Source

I don't think the women leave home without their makeup. I think they would still be beautiful even without makeup.

I've seen the children coming home from school. They wear school uniforms. You can tell they are well fed and cared for.

Unlike some countries I’ve visited, the children don’t beg.

Men are clean shaven. The men’s hair doesn’t touch their collar. No hippies here!

Drivers are very polite. There can be bumper to bumper traffic, but drivers will let you in front of them if you need to change lanes. You just signal, and they let you in. At home if you tried that, the driver in back would loudly blow their horn at you. Drivers stop for you to walk across the street, too.

I have been so impressed by the fact that the people are very polite. No one would ever get in line in front of you. Wish I could say that for the people at home.

They seem to have a lot of pride in their homes. Some are painted pretty pastel colors. They have wrought iron fences. The front yard is like a courtyard and seems to be reserved for grass and flowers.

The houses are built of concrete (maybe it's stucco). I haven't seen any wooden houses. Josmary told me they are hurricane proof. She has been through hurricanes unafraid. I think that might be because of their strict building code.

I have seen very little litter in the streets.

Puerto Rico Has Many Beautiful Beaches

When you look at Puerto Rico on a map, you realize that is an island, which means there are beaches all around the island. Some of the beaches have white fine sand, and some have brown course sand. We went to one beach called Marchiquita that had these unusual big dark grey rocks. The ocean would rush in between these rocks. It was a beautiful sight. I am told that this rock is called Aeolianite (cemented sand dune). I am also told that the cross is erected because someone was killed in that spot, and the family is asking for prayers for that person. I think that is SO touching.

Some Other Reasons I Love Puerto Rico

Gambling is legal (not that I care), but Casinos are in all the major hotels. You don't see slot machines in stores, though.

Seniors like myself: ride the city buses free! Senior citizens enjoy discounts for movies. Regular price for general admission is only $4.00. I paid $3.00 to see the movie.

Seniors over 75 years old get in National Parks and Attractions FREE! I really lliked that.

They don't seem to have ANY INSECTS (Or at least not many) after four weeks, I have not seen even a common house fly. I have not seen ANY mosquitoes. I’m told they only come out in June, the rainy season. I saw one little lizard on the patio one day.

The grass they use for lawns doesn’t grow up, it stays pretty flat. It does not have to be cut often. I wish I could grow this kind of grass. I'll have to investigate that some more.

We went to the local WalMart. It was huge. It had a two story parking garage. I checked out the price of groceries, and they compared to what I pay at home. Gasoline is about the same price as we pay in Florida. They sell gasoline by the liter (don't ask me why). I asked a worker at a Texaco how much that would cost in gallons, and he told me.

Puerto Ricans love to sing and dance.

They have Festivals year round. They don’t have to have a reason.

Puerto Ricans Love Horses

At the entrance of Old San Juan, we saw many horses. We knew something was going on, but just didn't know what. Someone told us they were having a horse festival that day. Sure enough about 200 horses lined up and began to parade. They were Paso Fino horses. We were not expecting to see a horse festival, so that was a fun surprise.

A Favorite Place Of The Locals, Guavate

Everyone walks around with their cell phone attached to their ears (just like at home). My Puerto Rican friend talks on 3 phones at once. (Honestly)

I haven't seen anyone smoking in public.

They drive late model cars, especially Toyotas.

Excellent TV reception. You have a choice of English or Spanish speaking channels.

Excellent cell phone reception. (Better than I have at home in the U.S.)

They love to eat, but you see very few overweight people. Maybe that’s because they eat chicken, beef, and lots of fruits and veggies.

Rice and Red beans are a staple, but it doesn’t seem to put weight on them We went to a little town called Guavate. The locals go there on Friday nights to play their music, dance and eat pig roasted on a spit. It was one of the best meals I have ever eaten.

Many Familiar Stores

I felt right at home when I saw the fast food places like Burger King, MacDonalds, Pizza Hut, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. This is a large Home Depot near our house.

JosMary invited me to go along with her to do her shopping at Walmart. It was a huge store with a 2 story parking garage. I was amazed at all the women shopping in their high heeled shoes and dress clothes. Here at home people go to Walmart dressed in their shorts and halter tops!

Have I Convinced You Puerto Rico Is A Wonderful Place?

I should be a "good will" ambassador for Puerto Rico. I am seriously considering becoming a permanent resident here. I think I could be happy living here. I'd sure like to give it a try. South Florida isn't that far away, it's only a two hour flight. I could always go home if I wanted to, right?

Puerto Rico Is Indeed An Enchanted Island

Puerto Rico is one of those places you visit once and you just have to go back. You realize there are places you haven't been, and sights you haven't seen. It is an island that has so many diverse natural wonders: from mountains to the rain forests.

Two of my daughters and I spent a six day vacation in Puerto Rico. Threre was not enough time to visit all the wonders of Puerto Rico, but we had a wonderful time. I invite you to come along with us on our vacation day by day by following the links I have provided.

It is called the Enchanted Island for good reason.

Mary, I'm so glad you're enjoying your stay in my island!

Two beaches down from Marchiquita is where I would spend all my weekends and summers as a child - Vega Baja.

The rock is called aeolianite and the structure itself is known as a cemented sand dune. You can climb the ones in Vega Baja safely when it's not stormy season - sorry, this is stormy season, but the sight of the water coming in is unbelievable. Should you see a cross on them means a person died there and people ask for prayers.

The flowers in your picture of the observatory are called Trinitarias and as you know abound in the island.

You are sending me down memory lane! Should you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. And do remember crime is still present in the streets so don't go out at night. Enjoy and God bless!

Oh, Agnes I am so excited that you gave me the info I was wondering about! I will go in and make some notes about the cross, the flower and the rock! The area I am staying is Rato Rey. It is a nice surburb of San Juan. I never go out after dark, though. Josmary has really taken me under her wing, and makes sure I am OK. I appreciate all your help, I really do, and if I need anything ansered, I will call on you. Josmary tells me Puerto Ricans do pay Fed. Inc. tax and that's not my info said. I may have to correct that. Thanks again for all your help, and for posting on FB and for the vote! Thanks again for everything! Regards....

It looks like you have been completely enchanted by Puerto Rico, Mary. I'm not surprised. The climate is perfect - warm all year long with a breeze - and the people are friendly.

I have found I can survive almost anywhere in P.R. as long as I know how to say: Too expensive ('demasiado caro') ... where is the restroom? ('donde esta el bano') ... and where is this address ('donde esta esta direccion'). When you are driving, 'alto' means stop. And 'un poco' from my last comment means a little. Enjoyed this hub.

Hi there, drbj. Nice to see you again. I have to leave this beautiful place next Wed. I promise I'm not going to bore everyone anymore with my ramblings of my love for Puerto Rico! I think I could learn Spanish if I just spent more time here. I love listening to them speak to each other. It's a beautiful language even if I don't understand what they are saying. Good night...

Capedium 4 years ago

What happenned to my comment.. It was a Hub on it's own. I don't believe it was only that little that came out. I mean, I had fun reading this Hub.. I had plenty of things and story to tell.. I had even written on my wish list A trip to Puerto Rico,it was number 10 on the list.

I mean a place that looks and sound like Heaven, where every one acts like Angel.. (calm, polite and nice), where you are allowed to do all you want, where you free to live your life.. With plenty of food to eat and still look fit.. I mean, I might get married to a Puerto Rico woman.. This Hub was kept me smiling and hmmm ing.

I mean, my mum and dad should go leave there, I know they will be treated like queens and kings.. I mean, I love this Hub, you got me dreaming Puerto Rico. I just don't know why my comment didn't apear in full. As a matter of fact, when I paste it, I read it, and smiled..

Great Hub.. voted all the way up

Thanks for following me, Mary - I am in the process of getting a passport so maybe I can travel to places like Puerto Rico, finally. I've heard that it is a charming and beautiful place. I believe they also dance the Tango there and so I would love to see that, since I've been fascinated with that dance and other romantic music. It must have been great to really get to know the place during 3 months there - that would be my choice, to stay awhile. Very nice hub.

jill 4 years ago

Hey! I live in Puerto Rico! I'm so glad you like it so much that it inspired this entry! I can't resist commenting on something: the highways are really just ok, and any other side roads are crap with pot holes everywhere. There are running jokes about it, but it doesn't feel like such a joke when you hit a massive pothole going 50mph and a tire blows leaving you stuck on the side of the road. That only happened once at that speed, but two other times going slower on side streets. Tires blow all of the time, the tire frames bend when you dive into a hole causing air to leak :)

I quite like living here, I love learning Spanish, dancing salsa and having the beach right here with a beautiful breeze all year long, windows open all of the time!

mary615 profile image

mary615 4 years ago from Florida Author

Hi, jill, You are so lucky to live in Puerto Rico! I wish I did. The main roads we traveled were excellent. We really didn't get off on the side roads for fear of getting lost. Mary, I've been to Puerto Rico at least four times. I went up to the Cruceta in Ponce, and can attest to the women wearing their sexiest clothes to go down the street to buy bread. I still managed to stay true to my style and wore my flip flops the whole time I was there!

There are many similarities between Cuba and Puerto Rico - the carnivals, the music, the pig roasting get-togethers, the beaches, and the friendliness. In fact, there is a song in Spanish that says that Cuba and Puerto Rico are the two wings of one bird. We have similar heritage as well and physically you can't tell us apart.

It's a beautiful island and it offers a wide variety of activities for tourists. The mountains are absolutely stunning, too. If you, however, want those 80 degrees throughout most of the year, and want to keep the beauty of the Florida beaches you're familiar with, and the comfort of those tank-tops and flip-flops when going out, then you must become my neighbor and move to South Florida!

By the way, we have the street vendors competing with the ice cream trucks. We even have a scissor-sharpener, which was a tradition that was brought to Miami from Cuba - a man who rides his bicicle playing this really Asian-sounding song through a speaker, and advertising his business of sharpening knives and scissors on the spot. Maybe I'll write a hub about street vendors in South Florida. I already have one on characters that can be found while walking down South Beach. It might be a good follow-up.

I had fun reading this, and the photos are great! You did a good job capturing the Puerto Rican spirit.

I have lived in Puerto Rico my whole life. And you definitely did a job capturing the spirit of us Puerto Ricans. Everything you said so is true. The food, the cabbies, the fruit and vegetable vendor, even the women shopping in their high heels!! (btw I'm not one of them. I prefer a good pair of flats!) I'm glad you enjoy our little island!!

Hi, YadireE, how nice to meet another Puerto Rican! I really loved your Enchanted Island. I have written several Hubs on Puerto Rico, including a six day vacation my two daughters and I took. You might enjoy reading those, too.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting, Mary

Hi Peggy W As much as you like to travel, you really should plan to go to Puerto Rico. You could cruise from your nearest port to PR then hop off the ship and tour the island for a few days, then just cruise right on home to Texas! You would love it there.

Thanks for the votes, I appreciate that, Mary

Hi Mary!

I am static that you went and enjoyed my Puerto Rico! It's been 6 years since I last walked my old San Juan. It brought tears to my eyes. I showed your hub to my kids and husband, they were speechless. I miss the beaches and country spots. The pictures have made me sad , yearning my roots and wishing I was there.

I am tearing up. Thank you for taking me back. Voted way up and sharing.

Hi anaceleste. Oh, I can't imagine why you would have ever left Puerto Rico! I'm so happy you enjoyed my Hub on why I love Puerto Rico. I thought it was a beautiful place. I have written several Hubs on PR which you might enjoy. My two girls and I spent 6 wonderful days there, and I wrote a Hub on each day. I have linked those Hubs above. I would like to move there some day. I liked everything about that place!

Thanks for reading and commenting, for the votes and for the share.

Robert 4 years ago

Please, I live in Puerto rico for the last 25 years and I would love to live where you went to. I laughed so hard when you said there no potholes. Where were you driving?, on the sidewalks. When a person comes to P.R. for the first time, they find a paradise, but the truth is that the quality of life is really poor. The crime rate is one of the highest in the world. That is the truth. That's just one of many reasons many Puertorricans have left the island. Maybe when we change the terrible government we have, things will get better. Good luck.

mary615 profile image

mary615 4 years ago from Florida Author

Hi, Robert. I'm sure Puerto Rico has areas of extreme poverty, just like where I live in S. Florida. We have homeless people and slum areas, too. Where I live is not so bad, but Miami and the larger cities have homeless people and a lot of crime too.

I'm sorry you have a bad government. Ours is not the greatest either.

Yes, the part of Puerto Rico I saw was paradise, and I loved it.

Thanks for reading and commenting. Mary

Mary, I have a cousin who moved himself, wife (who was of Puerto Rican descent) and their new baby to Puerto Rico, because of much of what you actually described here. His marriage actually went south though recently, but when asked if he would come home, he said quite simply "no!" He loves it down in Puerto Rico and would totally agree with your hub article. Have voted and shared too.

Jessica 4 years ago

Hi, I liked your article and thought it highlighted many of the good things in PR. I live here on the east side of the island. I just thought it would be good to give a balanced view though on a couple of things:

the roads aren't great, lots of potholes even on main roads and highways outside the major metro areas

there are TONS of insects including mosquitoes. We currently have an epidemic of Dengue virus due to high mosquito populations. I myself have over 20 bites on my body right now.

The island is not very clean. There is trash thrown everywhere in most places. People don't seem to think littering is a big deal. I have seen themt hrow trash out their windows on the highway many times.

The drivers here are actually not as nice as drivers in the states in my experience. it seems like a turn signal here means that the person in the other lane just speeds up. Serioously, there are some horrible drivers here.

That being said, I do love PR. I choose to live here because there are many beautiful and wonderful things that make up for the negative.

mary615 profile image

mary615 4 years ago from Florida Author

Hi, Jessica. Thank you so much for your honest and insightful comment on my Hub about why I love Puerto Rico. Maybe it takes more time to live in a place than just to visit to see the real truth, but I can honestly tell you I loved Puerto Rico, and I look forward to going there again. I'm glad the good things you enjoy about PR outweigh the negatives.

I just think your island is beautiful, and I enjoyed my visit there very much.

I do thank you for reading and commenting, Mary

Hi, kingboricua7. Thanks for reading my Hub on why I love Puerto Rico. When I got up this AM it was 55 degrees (S. Fl), the first thing I said was : I want to go back to PR!

I have never been to Cuba, either. I remember when I was younger, my friends would go there for their honeymoon, and come home raving about the place. Yes, it is different now. Maybe someday....

When you have some time, I invite you to read my other Hubs on PR.

Yes, I love that place!

Wanda Torres-Texas 3 years ago

Hey, I was born in Puerto Rico left when I was 10 years old, I would Love to move there but there has been a lot of crime and drug actions and also lots of killing among drug dealers. That was not like that back in 1980 , but also the economy there is very , very expensive. Reality is a gallon of milk will cost me there almost 6 dollars, while in texas 3.00. You see ,the big difference? Plus everyone who was born and is a native puerto rican wants to move due to the high cost of things. Another issue there is medical insurance and medical care. It sucks. Trust me we went through that already. More to add is the jobs, I'm a Certify Medical Assistant and my pay is like $12-18 an hour. In Puerto Rico the pay sucks, they pay you for that field like $8 dollars an hour. That is not a great living. Making 8 an hour would never maintain any thing , like bills, mortgage etc. It is beautiful and wonderful to go for a visit, vacation but not to live. That is my ,and my whole family experience ever since we left Puerto Rico.

Hi Wanda Torres-Texas.Thanks so much for adding your insightful comment on my Hub about Puerto Rico. You would know far better than I about some of the drawbacks in living there. I fell in love with PR, but I have never lived there and you would know better than I about these things.

I just read your notes on Puerto Rico.. My son is there now on vacation and my sister in law and I are wanting to go there to backpack across the countryside, or rent a room for a month and just explore. We don't have a lot of money, so it will be done in Hostels at the very least, we want to stay a few months if possible. We are 65 years old, and love to walk and do things. I do a lot of photography, and I would definitely take my camera.
