York - The Most Haunted City in the World
Those of us with an interest in the paranormal might like to know that, according to the Ghost Research Foundation International, York is the most haunted city in the world. After comparisons were made with cities like Los Angeles, Paris and Brisbane, York came out on top with a total of 504 recorded hauntings.
For most of us this is all harmless fun and only serves to underline the extensive array of ghostly places you can visit in this most historic of towns, which was first settled in 71AD.
We only have to look at York’s heritage to understand why attractions like the York Dudgeon on Clifford Street or York’s Most Haunted House at number 35 Stonegate, are popular with tourists.
If you have time you should take one of the ghost walks that takes visitors through a guided tour of the town’s most historically significant and haunted sites. They are imaginatively conducted by guides who keep the crowd entertained with light humour and provide an air of theatre to their performance.
Most ghost walks begin at The Shambles, a beautiful cobbled street with overhanging timber-framed buildings, which date back as far as the fourteenth century and served as the inspiration for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter films.
No matter how you choose to experience the ghostly side of York, you will do so with a smile on your face and a story to tell when you get back home.
