I was touring Tamilnadu state with my students who are teacher trainees ,in the month of October, 2009, explaining them about the fantastic tourist places in Tamil Nadu.Tamil is the state language here, which is having a history of about 2000 years.Hindus are in large number in this state.Tamil Nadu is a big state in south india, with more than 7 crore population. I have toureed that state more than 10 tomes in the past 20 years.I know the language of the state-Tamil, to managable extent.

We belong to Vidyavahini college of Tumkur, just 70 K.ms fron Bangalore.

When I and my staff offered different proposals to our teacher-trainees for educational tour, majority of them opted for a tour to Tamil Nadu and became ready to pay Rs.3200/- as tour fee. Mr.B.R.Ramachandra,my senior sub ordiante on the staff, was kept incharge of arrangements. We had made a travel package with a known south India travel package expert.

Tamil Nadu is present on the east coast of India, with Bay of Bengal at its one edge.It has vast area. This state has Chennai as its capital. This was formerly called Madras by Britishers when it was their presidency.Pondichery is another tiny state(union territory) attached to this state.

Day 1-We reached Ooty at late noon. The weather was a bit chilly. The botanical garden is its main attraction. We can find different kinds of trees and plants there. It is about 54 hectares in area. We’ll find many trees and plants of all countries here like aster, French marigold etc. The garden is beautifully designed. From here, Kodaikanal is about 6hours’ journey by road.

Day 2- We went to kodaikanal through a joyful route. We saw beautiful oak trees, nilgiri trees in the route. We were in a valley. Weather at kodaikanal was also chilly. Both these places are hill stations, fit for use as summer resorts. We saw a pillar rock which is exactly like a pillar here. The nature is beautiful. From a high point from the hill we are able to see the whole valley; it was a wonderful sight to watch. There is a boating club here. WE can enjoy pedal pedal boating on a flat, rectangular, wide lake

Day 3- Now we are in Madurai, which is well known for it’s temple of the Goddess Meenakshi ( parvathi) with its architectural beauty. It is about 1000 years old.chidambaram is another place of tourist attraction, with a big Nataraja temple. But it is far from madurai.

Next we saw a palace of the king Thirumalai Nayagar. Constructed in 1635.Though only, one-fourth part of the palace is now remaining, it is beautiful to look .visiters should not miss it.. Near this, is the ‘Gandhi Museum’.Madurai is about 5hours journey from Kodaikanal

Day 4- Now we are in Kanyakumari, it is a city formed in the bottom-most point of India.

It is the best place to see the sun set and sun rise. Here is a temple of the goddess Kanyakumari (Parvathi). A valuable diamond is present in the nose ring of the goddess’ statue. .Here there is a statue of of a poet Thiruvalluvar. This is 133 feet long. It is made of many stones. And here we’ll find a monument of Vivekananda. Many years ago Vivekananda came here and meditated for 3 days, on a rock about 2 k.ms away from shore. A memorial is built on that rock, about 40 years ago.

Kanyakumari is the meeting point of Bay of Bengal,Arabian sea, and Indian ocean. From here, we drove to Srirangam, about 300 K.ms away.

Day 5- srirangam is also place with a beautiful temple for lord Vishnu. It has a statue of garuda (eagle) who is the devotee vehicle of lord Vishnu. The statue is about 23 feet high.

Next we went to Tanjavur. It is just 55 k.ms away from Srirangam. Here we can see a 300 year old palace which is now converted into a museum. Here we can see old materials used by the king. Here we can find 3 different secret passages which was used by the king to run away when he was attacked. This museum has largest collection of Nataraja statues

Day 6- Next we’ll see Chennai (Madras) the capital of Tamilnadu. Here , the museum at Egmore area, is very important place to visit. This apart, a memorial for Thiruvalluvar is present. It is called ‘Valluvar Kottam’It is in the form of a chariot.Infront of this, is an auditorium.

Marina beach, snake park, crocodile park, are the other points to be seen at Chennai.

Day -7-We visited Mamallapuram-the seat of pallava sculpture. Here we can see temples and , caves carved beautifully. The cave temples here belong to 7th century B.C.

The same evening we visited Vellore, where there is famousLakshmi temple. It is a modern temple, opened just 3-4 years ago. The specialty is- the main temple is fully covered with metallic plates electroplated with gold.It looks so bright.more than 50 crores of rupees is spent for this. .

Our schedule was over and we returned to Bangalore.

But there are other places to see.Like-Rameshwaram,Kancheepuram, Chidambaram etc. There are beautiful temples in these places also.

Tamilnadu is a hot place. You should have simple and loose clothes while wandering here. This is a state that has maintained traditional style of living and beliefs, with modern outlooks. Many Indians living in America and other parts of the world as doctors and scientists, belong to this state. There are banks everywhere in Tamil Nadu. You will have no problem in encashing your ATM cards, or, transacting with your credit cards.Apart from those mentioned here, many other places with tourist attraction are there in Tamil Nadu.

Wish you joyful tour in Tamil Nadu when you visit India, next time.Hotel accomadations are available everywhere..

Very happy to read this Hub! Hope you have enjoyed all the important places in Tamil Nadu. Really good planning as you visited both popular hill stations of South India including various temples. Kanyakumari and Mahabalipuram are unique places where you can enjoy many interesting features like Valluvar statue, Vivekananda Rock and Architecture of Pallavas and Beach. Madurai is also known for its Goddess Meenakshi Temple! Any way congrats for having nice experience!

Very informative hub about Tamil Nadu tourism. I had been to Tamil Nadu a few times, and enjoyed my trip more during Nov-December. Other times it was very hot. Many tourist places are there in this land of temples.
