All About Couch Surfing - Travel the World!

Updated on July 9, 2009

So What is Couch Surfing?

Couch Surfing was created in America over a decade ago, however it really took off five years ago.  It was at this time that members of the Couch Surfing Team set up the Couch Surfing website to help travellers travel the world for free.  This community of hospitality, letting random people stay at your house, became an instant hit.

The Craze of Couch Surfing rocked the travelling community as more and more couch surfing site sprung up.  This cheap free, and with rating systems, safe way to travel the world with no accommodation costs suddenly meant anyone could go travelling on next to no money!

The couch surfing communities now have members numbering in the hundreds and thousands, all of which readily give up their couch or spare room to other travellers.  By couch surfing you rarely have to pay for food, let alone accommodation and you can easily see exactly what the world has to offer by integrating yourself into local cultures and customs!

So Why Should I Couch Surf?

Couch surfing is not just a free way to travel, by participating in couch surfing you get to meet people from hundreds of different cultures, pick up new languages and try new things.

And couch surfing doesn't end there, as we speak Couch Surfing universities are being created, as well as couch surfing hostels, sponsored by donations.  At these places you can learn new skills, crash and learn to do things you would never have even imagined!

On top of that most cities around the world have regular Couch Surfing Meet Ups, these allow Couch surfers to meet other travellers, people of similar interests and often several couch surfers meeting could prompt an entire change in plan of a holiday.

It's not at all uncommon (I have done it myself) for a single conversation to send you careering hundreds of miles out of your way in search of that fun hostel, stunning architecture or perfect beach!

So Whats the Catch?

Well all payment is voluntary, however things are not always as nice as they seem.  Women are advised to travel with someone else, there have been occasional horror stories, though every one tries their best to keep out those only in it for sex.

Sometimes people staying over at yours may not always be the most welcome of guests, some may smell a little, some may be weird and some may just ignore you completely and use your home simply to sleep in for a few days.

All in all though the benefits heavily outweigh the cons.  The couch surfing project is not only amazing but one of the most interesting and beautiful projects I have been a part of!
