Annecy, France - The most beautiful french town in the heart of the alps

Annecy - la plus belle ville

In September, 2007 I found myself arriving in Annecy on my own, by train from Paris. There is a direct train from Paris, Gare de Lyon, which has you arriving in Annecy in about 3 hours.

With my first walk along the lake, I couldn't believe my luck. Somehow, I managed to choose the most beautiful place I've ever seen as my home for the next 4 months. Annecy is a town which sits directly on Lac d'Annecy, which is surrounded by the Swiss alps on three sides. As my landlords joked - why buy Evian water, when it's coming out of the facets for free.

The lake sits right next to the old town and can easily be explored during a day, but deserves far more time to fully appreciate the beauty.  My morning commute to the French language school allowed me to bike through the old town and along the lake. Often as I looked out at the lake, I saw a solo fisherman through the morning fog, and just a hint of the mountains behind.

While visiting Annecy, take advantage of the location. Hike up the mountains, cycle around the lake, or take a day trip to Chambery, Chammonix, Lyon, or Geneva.

Annecy could be seen in a few hours, however to become totally enchanted by it, why not stay a while? Find an apartment to let for a few weeks, and enroll in a French language course. The school will help you find accommodation to your suiting. Ifalpes was the school I attended in Annecy, and it was a decision which changed my life and the best decision I've ever made.

I could have written this article! I went to Ifalpes in 2000, couldn't believe my luck when I saw the town. I wound up moving there and have lived here since 2001. I am still enchanted.

I would not recommend the school of french IFALPES, the worst experience I have ever had. Annecy - is pretty nice town, but the school and accommodation I was offered by school spoiled the whole impression of this place.

The groups are huge, from 14 to 18 people, I (with my level A2) and other new students felt uncomfortable in the group 5 (level B2), where everyone was fluent in French, and I hardly understood a word. But to change a group was impossible due to the fact that other groups had even more students there. So most of the time I was listening to other students who could speak French far better then me.

Regarding accommodation...it was a whole story. My landlord was very rude, management in school ignorant to my problems with the landlord, who ended up even threatening me.

So I would recommend to stay away from this particular school.
