Asheville NC: Blue Ridge Mountains, White Water Rafting, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, and More...

Asheville NC and the Blue Ridge Mountains...

One of the best places in the United States to spend time in outdoors is in the southeastern section, in particular Asheville NC… The climate is fantastic because North Carolina is centrally located, meaning it doesn’t get too cold in the winter, or too hot in the summer. The Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding the state really help to keep the temperature in the moderate zone, and you can experience some fantastic summer weather here. The Blue Ridge Mountains are some of the oldest in the United States, if not the world, and there is so much to do here that you could spend the whole summer if you are so inclined!

Asheville NC is one of those relatively small towns with a distinct personality all its own, and it attracts the sort of crowd that just wants to ditch society with all the hustle and bustle of a busy life and just turn more to nature and relax… You will find all kinds here, drop outs from all walks of life including ex-bankers and stock brokers, and even hippies from the 60’s! You can find pot smoking accessory stores downtown in the tourist district, where a person could pretty much get whatever it is that he’s looking for, and nobody would bat an eye. People come to Asheville NC from all over the United States seeking a peace that they couldn’t find elsewhere. They want to come and “commune with nature”, whatever that means, and you will also find many artists and creative types here from the outdoor marketplace

Asheville NC is Known for the Arts...

You will find a myriad of outdoor art festivals here in Asheville NC, along with a large performing arts community. People here love to attend any number of plays, concerts, or theatre shows downtown, and afterwards enjoy a relaxing night at a nearby bar or nightclub in the area. There are plenty of “grunge bars” where you can go to listen to home grown singers and bands that are up and coming. Mountain crafters are also popular, as they create their specialty craft from the natural elements of the area, such as wood from the forests, glass blowing, or any number of elements native to the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you are interested in seeing some local work, then visit one of the many art galleries in town.

Many people come just for a visit, but then decide to stay. Watch out, you may be also attracted to the simpler life and want to move to Asheville NC… There is plenty to do here with regards to in city cultural exhibits and attractions, but there is also the outdoor aspect that most people love! Since the city is located right in the Blue Ridge Mountains, there are many mountain biking trails nearby, in addition to hiking, horseback riding, and whitewater rafting. If you’ve never taken a horseback ride through the mountains, then this is a great place to try it! It’s a lot different from just riding on flat ground, and the temperature can change fairly rapidly the higher you go. Be sure to bring a good camera, because there will be plenty of great photo opportunities in the mountains, and if you decide to visit in the fall for the change of colors in the leaves, then the 3rd week in October is usually the best time to come.

Fall Colors in Asheville NC...

In my opinion, the fall is the best time to come visit because of the proximity of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the beautiful Orange, Red, Yellow, and other colors that come out in the leaves at that elevation. If there is a particularly wet summer, meaning lots of rain, then the leaves will show their colors much more than if there was a dryer summer or drought. When the leaves are perfect, people start coming out of the woodwork to visit Asheville NC, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the surrounding area. It really is incredible up there at that time of year, and if camping is what you’re looking for, there are plenty of places to do that!

Camping near Asheville NC can be very interesting at even slightly higher altitudes, and the later in the year you go the more interesting it can get! I once spent a night camping in a tent along the Blue Ridge Parkway and the temperature got down to 20 degrees and I woke up to a slight dusting of snow on the ground! They have to close the Blue Ridge Parkway in the wintertime because the intense snowfall they get during the height of the winter months is too much to be able to safely navigate the roads. So in effect, pretty much everything shuts down up there for a few months until the snow starts to melt or the government begins to clear it away. It’s an incredible journey, and not matter what time of year it is I highly recommend it!
