Updated on March 30, 2016

Kansas City Chicken

Okay this is not a tale of two cities but it's a tale of two restaurants. On one end you have a fast food place that puts out extraordinary and inexpensive food. On the other you have a restaurant that puts out legendary fried chicken which has won awards from magazines and food organizations.

Forget about KFC, Church's and Popeye's. In this hub, we are talking about Kansas City traditions

Go Chicken Go

One place in Kansas City that I find to be special is Go Chicken Go.
They were started in the 60s by a couple who owned a gas station. They were looking for a type of food they could cook in their station and serve customers.

Eventually the chicken was selling so well they decided to get rid of the gas station and just serve chicken. They remodeled their station, and they were selling chicken to the masses. I remember as a young adult going there, you would walk in the front of this gas station looking building, and place your order. At that time, you could get chicken and a drink for $2-3 or so. The prices have gone up since then, but they are still very reasonable.

The couple sold out to their children several years back, and they have built several new locations around the Kansas City area. Once those locations opened, the family demolished the original gas station and built a modern restaurant on that site.

Unlike Strouds, they haven't won a lot of awards but they do win the votes of the common people who eat there day in day out because they know they can get affordable fresh food that is good quality. The chicken is very good, and their gizzards are awesome too.

Strouds Fried Chicken

Strouds has been open since 1933 in various locations. They originally served other types of food but one Saturday night they had a fried chicken special. It sold out within a couple hours and they have been serving fried chicken ever since.

They have won numerous awards such as the James Beard Award for Excellence the Zagat award for best restaurant and they been featured in. publications including Gourmet magazine, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Bon Appétit, Esquire, Condé Nast Traveler and Playboy. Michael Stern of Roadfood.com says Strouds makes the most delicious fried chicken in America.

Stroud's serve meals home style, all dinners include salad or homemade chicken soup with a choice of potato, green beans and homemade cinnamon rolls. As often can be the case, good does not come cheap, The average adult meal runs $16 and the average kids meal runs $10.

While it is expensive, most folks believe that Stroud's serves the best chicken in the country and they're probably right.
