Butt Naked Ice Swimming

Researching Butt Naked Ice Swimming has been fun, and just downright hilarious with some of the information my research discovered. Ice swimming is exactly what the two words denotes: swimming which requires cutting a hole in a frozen crust of ice in order to gain access to a body or pool of 0 °C water. Supposedly ice swimming is possible because the water beneath the ice releases heat, so the water does not instantly refreeze.

Within this sport some swimmers use swimwear, others wear weird costumes like you see on Halloween, and yet over a third love jumping in the ice cold water butt naked in their birthday suit only. I guess come to think of it in sub-zero weather swimming trunks would probably not offer much protection from the cold anyway. Before exploring the why of swimming in the nude, let’s learn a little about this freestyle swimming.

Because this outdoor bathing or swimming occurs in the middle of winter and is unusual and sometimes ceremonial, it often times attracts media coverage. The Furthest Under Ice Swim that is in the Guinness Book of World Records has to be watched via the You-Tube website. Dutchman, Wim Hof swam 57.5 m. (188.6 ft.) underneath three feet of an ice lake near the Finnish village of Kolari, deep inside the Arctic Circle on March 16, 2000.

Wim Hof often called the Iceman for his ability for withstanding cold is well known for running marathons in the snow in trunks, being submerged into ice, and is the only non-monk to have mastered Tummo to control one’s body temperature. Now, I’m sure you will agree that this guy is a true athlete that has dedicated his live to the sport of enduring freezing temperatures. While few have pushed their bodies to the extreme level of Wim Hof; there are many that have endured the sport of ice swimming for 20 years and more. However sorry, ladies and gentlemen but butt naked ice swimming will not be a part of this Winter Olympics.

China

I must admit out of all the information research, I was most surprised to see that China actually participated in ice swimming workouts. Until I recalled that some regions of China does have cold harsh winters. In northern China, the Chinese brave the ice for good health while swimming takes place in the Songhua River in Harbin. Ice swimming in China started growing popularity in the 1940’s and has an estimated 200,000 registered swimmers.

North America

The Coney Island Polar Bears Club is the oldest winter bathing organization in U.S. It was founded by Bernarr Macfadden in 1903 whose belief was that a dip in the ocean during the winter can be a boon to one’s stamina, virility, and immunity.

Members from America and Canada swim in the Atlantic Ocean; gatherings at Coney Island every Sunday at one o’clock sharp, for swimming workouts starting in November through April and holds an annual plunge on New Year’s Day. Not only do they have fun plunging into the ice cold waters, but this freestyle swimming team travels as a group, and contribute to charitable fund-raisers as well.

Health Benefits

Based on what you’ve read so far, I’m sure that you are still wondering, “Why some people seem to prefer butt naked ice swimming while others seem to prefer trunks and or funny looking outfits?” Well, let’s take a look at some of the health benefits of this ice sport to see if a clue might be there.

The health benefits are: Advocates of ice swimming believe that this type of activity gives them the four V’s: vim, vigor, verve, and vitality. Members feel that it improves circulation and helps to build up the immune system to protect against colds and flu-like symptoms. In addition, many report receiving a strong sense of well-being and natural high.

Some medical researchers’ studies show that ice swimming workouts can help to rehabilitate injuries and some illnesses however there is not much proof supporting it is effective in preventing ill health. A senior medical researcher who is studying the clinical benefits, Juhani Smolander states, "In studies on rheumatic diseases, cold treatment reduces aches and pains, and in some cases, depending on the treatment, patients can do without painkillers. It doesn’t cure the disease, but it does relieve the symptoms."

Other researchers have found positive psychological impact in that people that immerse themselves in the icy waters regularly say they feel better than those that stay indoors all winter long. Yet another group of researchers states that it builds self-confidence and raises self-esteem that you can do something that you’re afraid of and there are others that says they’ve experienced health and beauty aspects such as softer and smoother skin.

Health Risks

The health risks are: Naturally anyone with heart conditions, or any other serious ailment, needs to be careful with attempting ice sports. The effects of the freezing water and the accompanying shock to one’s body might be harmful; therefore one should first talk about this activity with your doctor before descending into the icy depths.

Another risk is ensuring safety when going through the transitions of warming up after one takes the icy plunge. There must be steps that must be taken to avoid causing the body some distress from the drastic temperature changes. It has been said that heat causes the blood to rise to the surface of the body while the cold forces the blood back inside towards the heart.

Northern Europe

This region consists of Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, and Lativa and ice swimming is a tradition connected with the sauna tradition.

It is not to be confused with the Russian dousing because it is not a religious ritual; it is done to as a stress reliever and a means of cooling off rapidly after staying in the sauna for a length of time. Finland is well known for its Avantouinti (ice-hole swimming) Society ; their ice swimming season began in October and will go through February.

Russia

The Russian ice swimmers are called “walruses” instead of “polar bears” and traditions are strong for freestyle ice swimming and dousing with cold water.

Not only are they done for health benefits, but for sports, for the Baptism of Our Lord feast, and as a ritual for the Orthodox Church. Here’s an article written by BBC’s James Rodgers that will provide you with an inside look at the Russian Walrus Club.

Ending thoughts…

I must admit that seeing the pictures of butt naked swimmers taking the ice plunges on television is what spurred the research into ice swimming sports. However, within the research performed I did not find any articles that directly addresses why some ice swimmers prefer to take the plunge butt naked. Because of the revealing nature of some of the pictures and videos I found I could not post them here within this hub. However, if you are interesting in reviewing such information just Google “butt naked or nude ice swimmers” and you will find what is out on the web. Also Google "Other Polar Bear Clubs & Related Topics" to find additional links to more clubs, and ice swimming activities.

I could only find one statement that alluded to the fact that real ice swimmers swim naked. So regrettably I have to end this hub with my own assumption. At this point if I had to provide the reasoning for choosing ice swimming in the buff during cold winter months, I would simply say because an individual wanted to do so. I would imagine that their way of thinking might be similar to individuals that choose to moon you or those that just love walking around in the nude.

As with any new exercise program if you are under at physician's care, please check with your doctor prior to participating in this outdoor game of swimming workouts. Again, I really had fun composing this hub, however, there was one serious video that really caught my attention and hopefully it will raise some thoughts of your own. The video below reflects how global warming has begin to impact the North Pole. Please participate in the poll below and comments are always welcomed!

They had "cold plunge" pools along with the warm pools of various temperatures at some of the European spas I went to like in Baden Baden. I opted out. I figured I was on vacation, and only intended to do fun things.

There's a short piece on therapeuticd use of cold water in the book, 101 Great Ways to Improve Your Health. They said among other things, it was good for blood pressure. It's included in my Books That Impacted... hub. They suggested (for us wussies) to turn off the hot at the end of your shower, and ease your feet and hands under the cold water.

I second TattoGuy. I don't have a high tolerance for cold, let alone swimming in cold water! But then again, this is a very interesting hub (especially the pics :D). Thanks Money Glitch.

@rmcrayne - RM you are just full of wonderful information. I will be sure to stop by and check out the book. However, I think I will pass on trying this one. Now in the "summer" because it is so hot in Texas, I love taking cold showers. But let's face it the water is not cold. LOL!:)

But, I just can't even think of how I would begin to intentionally jump into zero degree ice water. Thanks for sharing your insight on this activity.:)

Enjoyable Hub!!!!!!

Ice swimming definitely enhances immune system. These activities give vim, vigor, verve, and vitality. The water below the ice generates heat that makes the whole scenario to go forward and experience with. There are large numbers of sites across the globe where these games can be experienced and enjoyed at its fullest.

Just recently watched one of these events up close and personal up in Dellwood, WI on New Year's. Though they were all fully clothed, and one guy actually was dressed in some form of armor. It's fun to watch, but I have to say I think the ones who do it are absolutely nuts.

Moneyglitch if you are from the parts of Texas that I've been to this must've been an exotic hub for you to write! In my state of Wisconsin there are many polar bear clubs that jump in on New Years day, I was surprised to hear about winter swim clubs though, that takes it to a whole new level! Also enjoyed your research on health benefits. My brother and I have gone winter camping (I have a hub on the subject) and we threatened to cut a hole in the lake with a chainsaw, but it was -15F or so and just surviving with all our clothes on was challenging enough! Great article, fun angle!

Thanks to you both for stopping by and commenting. :)

@Enelle Lamb - Hi Enelle! Wow,it has been weird how the weather has been hot in some parts of the world that is usually cold and vice versa. I imagine the Polar Bears in your area were disappointed that the water was warm.:)

@Ben - Hi Ben, you are right I'm in the part of Texas near the gulf were snow rarely occurs and if so not for more than a couple of hours. Sure I've seen nudes skinny dipping in the gulf before but never in the winter time.

LOL, you and your brother should have just jumped in. There was one video not on the hub, where some ice fishermen took off their clothes and swam from one hole in the ice to another. :) Thanks for commenting!

Amazing! I can think of nothing more unpleasant than swimming in icy water. Many years ago I had to do it - and I found it truly horrible. Since then I have sworn never to go into water that was not at least 25 degrees or more! Perhaps, as we get older, we all eventualy become wimps?

When I was fifteen I was skating alone on a desolate frozen pond on the North Yorkshire moors. Reaching the middle I went through the ice. It was impossible to climb out as there was nothing to grip and I kept slipping back in. I had to slowly break the ice all the way to the edge and pull myself out with reeds. It took an age and then I had a long freezing walk back to school.

I really have never been so cold ever in my life. I never want to be that cold again. Why anybody would want to immerse themselves in freezing water just seems like madness. Thank you for your hub.

Fantastic hub, Money Glitch--loved it. One thing I wonder if you came across in your research: I had a science teacher in middle school (who did not seem to like me, but that is beside the point). Apparently amongst scientists who work in the South Pole, there is a "200 degrees club" (I think I remember it being 300 degrees, but that doesn't make sense). Basically, you go from a hot tub of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and you go run outside into the -100 Fahrenheit weather of the South Pole.

This teacher showed us pictures of scientists in a hot tub and then running butt naked into the cold.

This is a little different from butt naked ice swimming, I realize, but still... kind of close. And thanks again for a hugely entertaining hub.

Money Glitch profile image

Money Glitch 6 years ago from Texas Author

@PRESIOUSANGEL3 - It does look like fun, however, I'm sure there are bound to be some injuries. One of the videos I viewed on YouTube showed a couple of guys that could not get out of the water because of the ice. :)

Another showed a guy that jumped in, but the ice didn't break. He definitely looked like he was hurt. I'm glad you enjoyed the hub, and thanks for stopping by for a read.:)

Money Glitch profile image

Money Glitch 6 years ago from Texas Author

@Lalulinho - I did not see any videos specifically from the South Pole, however what you described is exactly what most of the ice swimmers were doing behind the scenes (alternating between a hot tub or hot house of over 100 degrees and then plunging into the icy waters for a dip and or swim). Thanks for stopping by and sharing your insight. :)

I can only imagine what it would be like to go but naked swimming. Wow. I am very shy to begin with and my skin would freeze at the first touch of the icy water.

In opposite fashion, your story reminds me when I walked through the water on the shoreline of the Adaman Sea on the coast of Thailand. The water was very warm and the sand soft beneath my barefeet with the stars shining brightly in the sweet Asian night sky.

The harks of souvenir sellers at dozens of street stalls harking their wares to the hundreds of international clientele.

I could hear the music of six discoteques and seventy beer bars in the distance, the odor of jasmine incense snaking its way out the massage parlor windows back on Beach Road.

One woman screaming in Thai for her boyfriend who had become absorbed by a crowd of attractive streetwalers who were leading him into an isolated part of the beach.

Illegal gambling yachts could be seen far away from the shoreline and swift hot engined cigarette speedboats were ferrying in shipments of illegal cigarettes. Hoops and yells of Thai kick boxing fans screamed as their favorite plunged near kiling kicks into the body pressure points of his opponent. A rare and bittersweet, liquid mix of sights, sounds and smells of memories of teaching English in Thailand and "Swimming Butt Naked" brought back to me. Thanks!

What will people do next, go swimming in fire? These last days have got to be the worse days in history, people will do anything. I suggest prayer and faith to renew the mind, thus, practice good healthy habits.

@stars439 - LOL, Yes, I agree interesting and very cold swim indeed.:)

@Ladybird33 - Thanks Ladybird, surprisingly there have been more people willing to try this sport than I originally thought. I guess that why the Polar Bears, Walrus, and other clubs like those are increasing annually. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.:)

@hotelofall - You must be new, otherwise you would know that most Hubbers consider it a little rude to self-promote on their hubs. So here's a newbie tip for you - Most will not tolerate it and will delete your comments and or label you as spam. You get more hub love by leaving sincere comments and letting others find you on their own! :)

Money Glitch profile image

Money Glitch 6 years ago from Texas Author

@hotelofall- Sorry, I had to delete your comments because it had 3 self-promotional links, which is against the rules listed below the comment section. FYI- You get one link to your profile when you leave a comment. Hope this helps!:)

@Rookie70 - LOL! Yeah, Rookie I have to agree that some people will try anything. I've found another crazy sport like this one, however, there's not enough info on the net about it to write a hub, yet. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.

@jason1982 - Wow, the idea of taking a morning ice cold swim doesn't sound appealing to me! However, I guess if you're not a morning person, then there's nothing like an ice cold swim to get one invigorated and awaken. So hey, go for it, hehehe! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. :)

Just 4 words to start with: "Brrrrr!! NO THANK YOU!" ;-)

Great article, but for me, personally, I disagree with even the medical 'advice' about arthritis and such benefitting from cold therapy. For me, cold weather, being cold, or applying ice to an affected area make the pain WORSE, not better! If it hurts, why do it? I'll take a nice heating pad, thank you!

Money Glitch profile image

Money Glitch 6 years ago from Texas Author

@DzyMsLizzy - For arthritis the purpose of applying the cold therapy is to assist in reducing inflammation and tenderness, and if I remember correctly, one should alternate the hot and cold therapy. However, no one knows what works for an individual's body than that person; so keep on doing what helps your arthritis. :)

LOL!, I love your comment about the snapping turtles, thanks for stopping by and commenting. :)

@Wayne - It is a little shocking when you first hear about ice swimming in sub-zero water. In addition, it is amazing that there are so many people from all types of cultural backgrounds that participate in this sport globally.

@deancortez - Couldn't show it on the hub, but my research revealed about a third of the ice swimmers prefer to swim nude. You probably right; in sub-zero weather wearing only swimming trunks one would probably wish for clothes unless as you said they were hot. :)

Hey heyy!! so good that i discovered your hub now in the summer,so i can just laugh, lol..well, me and my husband are currently live in northern china, in a city called Daqing---only 2 hours by train from Harbin. We visit Harbin frequently especially the Sun Island Park which is in the Songhua river.. and yes the winter here in Northern China sucks! I grew in a tropical country, and by the beginning of my 30s I started my experience with harsh winter..so, it's like a big shock to me..from all-year-long summer region (Indonesia) into extreme climate especially the summer and the winter.. :p

Reading your hub giving me stronger urge to experience winter time in Finland one day..to experience living with my father in law big family and the coolness of sauna + ice swimming as well.. :D Thank for the great hub, Money Glitch!! Very informative!

Money Glitch There are tens of thousand of males that are into this. There is a whole society for it called clothed female naked male (CFNM) and it has 14,600,000 hits on Google while CMNF has only 183,000

I think a lot of males would love it, they just need our (and societies) permission to do it. I think more women would be into it also if they felt they would not be seen as perverts. We have parties where the men are naked but women are not and the males have often told a few women they are showing too much skin all the time they are totally naked in front of her.

There are several reasons to swim naked. For instance, you need less time to change your clothes, also wet swimsuit after swimming froze more as you have nothing on you.

Beside practical thinks it's also about feeling nature and be in full body contact with that. Let's assume some winter swimmers enjoy naturism.
