Fiction or Fairytale

One of my favorite places has always been the delightful town of Carmel, California. It is situated on Carmel Bay and often referred to as "Carmel by the Sea". Created at the beginning of the 20th century by a developer who marketed the community to artists, writers and professors, the Village of Carmel is quaintly nestled in a pine forest above the spectacular white-sand beach. Much like the charmed cottages out of a fairytale, each dwelling is a simple, often-handmade cottage nestled in a forest of live oak and Monterrey pines. Its residential streets lack sidewalks and streetlights because both are banned. Instead of street numbers, houses display names like No Worries, Lilliput, or Dog House.

Carmel with Claire

When I was young, fond memories of collecting the ocean’s tiniest shell perfections stands out as a favorite day trip with my Mother. With her huge Jackie-O sunglasses in place, my Mother Claire smiled and lead me down to a sparkling waterfront stage.

The fine grains of warm sand massaged our feet as we walked and finally covered our toes completely as the waves teased us with such a salty spray, serving up a frothy shore lined with treasures from the unknown depths of a little girl’s imagination. My bright hot pink bucket was brimming with the most unique charms from the sea. Smooth driftwood remnants, beautifully colored glass polished by the magically salty water, abalone pieces and intricate little shells, once home to a sea creature. We returned to our motel quite satisfied after a day of shell shopping Carmel style. My Mother never looked so beautiful and I would freeze this moment in time if I could. Ah sweet memories....

My dining palette that night, quite under developed even for a pre-teen, craved something a bit tastier, perhaps sweeter than the ocean served up. The unrecognizable meals listed on the menu, dimly lit by candlelight were of no interest, even if I could pronounce them. Instead my attention was fixated on the appealing dessert tray which circled by us periodically. This brings me to my second Carmel obsession: tiny hand crafted miniature cakes known as petits fours. These tiny French cakes were like none other, and I spent the rest of my summer trying to duplicate, but to my dismay, not even Susie Homemaker could assist.

Remembering a Fairytale

An original event or a memory, seasoned to my aging taste buds and a need to remember things this way? Like so many experiences that I revisit as an adult, I wonder how much is reality and how much is but a warm-hearted recollection that gives me a sense of well being. In life, we reflect on what we recall, who says it can’t be selective, and more importantly, who cares. I am finding that we create our own traditions and memories, tweeked or otherwise. My cup overflows with grief, pain and regret, I see and hear about so much suffering in our world, my heart is heavy. I focus instead on altered visions in my mind at times, embracing the imagination of innocence, like that of a young girl still unspoiled. Life can be more like a fairytale if we just believe.

So glad I stumbled upon this hub from a comment you made elsewhere. Carmel is one of my favorite places on earth. I was stationed at For Ord, CA. for basic training in 1963, and then sent back to Fort Ord as an MP after school in Fort Gordon, GA. I lived in Seaside for a while, then in Monterey right across from the city hall.

I was even in Carmel in 1959 for a mistaken honeymoon for highschool sweethearts who did not know better. Such a beautiful spot. Thanks for wtiting this. I want to go back top visit.

I knew you were a Carmel kinda girl Audrey! Especially back in the Hog's Breath Days - Most beautiful beaches around (of course I haven't been to that many) but to me I am sure it will always remain special because of the memories - just like you have with Julie!

Thank you so much for your wonderful and inspiring words!

Hope you are well my friend.

vocalcoach profile image

Oh Kathy...I love this hub! I spent so much time in Carmel - I know it like the back of my hand. Ate at "Hogs Breath Inn" so many times and I know each shop by heart. And talk about sumptious breakfasts! (well, no, you didn't ) :) however I had to add that because the food in Carmel is sooooo good.

I have taken many a morning walk on the beach - both when the fog was so dense you couldn't see your own hand and after the fog lifted.

The last time I was at Carmel was with my best friend and here sister, from Utah. She was dying of cancer and wanted to spend time there before "moving on". Her name was Julie and she loved Carmel so much. But then, anyone loves Carmel once they have seen it.

Such a glorious hub and I thank you for the memories. Voted up, useful, awesome, beautiful and interesting!

Hi Kitty, I know what you mean, writing this has made me want to go visit Carmel again, it's about a 2 hour drive and I haven't been there for years! Like most places, I think it's more commercial now, but there's also quite a bit of controversy over keeping it in the village-like state that was originally intended. Thanks for popping in K

Hi HBN - Thank you so much for your wonderful comments, I can really relate to what you said about the way we remember things, no doubt coming from emotion rather than fact... I loved the stunning photos and at first expected this hub to be a wonderful travel article but when you so smoothly wove the memories of your childhood trip with your mother into the hub it became truly magical. I agree with Kallini that memories are more related to emotions than fact. I also find that as you said, the older I get the more my memories of the past seem to change because I'm seeing them through a prism that is totally different from the way they were originally experienced. And yet that doesn't make my memories any less real to me.

Your last sentence reminds us that we have a choice about how we want to remember things: "I focus instead on altered visions in my mind, embracing the imagination of innocence still unspoiled, life can be more like a fairytale." If doing so gives us a sense of well-being and we are otherwise well grounded in reality I think it's a very healthy choice to make.

Voted up, useful, awesome, beautiful and interesting.

Kathy, it is a fairy tale and you were lucky to be there as a child. The reason why we cannot relive the same experiences when we come back is that we remember the emotions, not facts. With time the emotional memories get stronger, the factual weaker. Therefore, you would remember your childhood as more beautiful with age. Let it be.

Everything is about feelings, not facts. That is what childhood for.

What would we be without sweet memories?

What a charming place!
