Cesar Chavez Park sits in the middle of the expanding metropolis of Sacramento, California. Located in the heart of the City on J Street, Chavez Park provides some greenery and a place to relax in the center of California’s Capital city. Named after the famed immigrant labor leader, Cesar Chavez Park is a fitting memorial to the man who stood and fought with immigrant workers as Cesar Chavez Park provides workers of all backgrounds a place to relax and play.
The Park Itself
Cesar Chavez Park is 2.5 acres of land in the middle of Sacramento. The original park and site was first constructed over 100 years ago but was under utilized and run down. In the 1990s, as part of Downtown revitalization efforts, the park was redesigned and redone to attract lunch crowds and shoppers to a neglected city block. The City decided to rename the Park after Cesar Chavez and added a large and beautiful statute of the farm worker leader as the main focal point of the Park. The Park also features a spectacular water fountain, a café, plenty of trees and picnic tables. Chavez Park is a quiet and relaxing place to grab a quick bite to eat or sit on the grass and read a book.
The Farmer’s Market
While Chavez Park offers all the amenities of a regular park, it also offers many diverse and fun activities not offered elsewhere. One of the most popular attractions of the Park is the Sacramento Farmer’s Market. Held every Wednesday from May through October, this Certified Farmer’s Market offers shoppers fresh fruits and vegatables that are all locally grown. There is also usually musical entertainment available as well.
Summer Concert Series
Another popular attraction at Cesar Chavez Park is the Summer Concert Series. Every Friday Night during the summer, the Downtown Sacramento Parntership, the caretakers of Chavez Park, showcase Sacramento’s local musical talent on a small stage located at Chavez Park. There is no admission charge and offers kids of all ages a fun night in a family friendly environment. In addition to the great music, there are face painters, balloon animals, great food and great offered during at the Summer Concerts.
Community Gatherings
Depending on the day, Chavez Park has a lot of different activities. On Cesar Chavez Day, a parade around the City of Sacramento ends at the Park and offers food and information about the great migrant leader. When the professional sports teams win, Cesar Chavez Park is the location where Sacramento fans gather to celebrate. There are walking tours hosted at the park as well as wine tasting events. Best of all, Cesar Chavez Park offers a place in the middle of the hustle and bustle of everyday life to sit down, relax and enjoy being a part of a great community.
