Delhi to Chakrata Vacation By Road - Best Summer Holiday Destination near Delhi
Friends, as I feel writing about one travel destination every six months is too long time so I have decided to give you holiday travel destinations every three months. Now, April is the perfect month to start planning a road trip, as most schools in Delhi will be closed for two months and you have a plenty of time to plan your trip for the pleasure of your kids and family.
When it comes to enjoying school summer holidays, there is nothing better than giving your kids the best treat by taking them away from the scorching heat of summers in metros to somewhere really cool and pleasant where they can play all day long, learn new things whereas you and your partner relax and forget the busy life of Delhi, so this month, we will cover Chakrata which is a little hill station in the Uttaranchal State.
By road, Chakrata is only 332 kms from Delhi border and is totally different from other popular hill
stations of Northern India. In Chakrata, you
can visit Mundoli, Tiger Fall, Kanasar, and Devban as depicted via the
photographs taken en route. Enjoy these astonishing views of Mother nature.
It is interesting to note that Mussoorie is located just 77 kilometers from Chakrata if you are going by road. As Mussoorie is a very popular travel destination among Indians, you may already know that it has its fair share of narrow and twisty roads full of scenic beauty. At some places, roads are so much narrow that it is almost impossible for 2 cars to pass each other easily, here you have to take caution as one mistake and one could end up falling in 5000 to 7000 feet deep valley.
Though, this road is devoid of traffic, we took this route 2 times and both the times, we found no more than 3 to 4 vehicles en route. In fact, it is so lonely route that we hardly found 1 to 2 villages en route and not more than 10 to 12 people. So this route is not advisable in the evening hours as if you meet anything wrong, there is no one to help you, but this loneliness makes it one of the best scenic roads to enjoy in the daytime.
The beauty of this road is that it is the same road which goes to Yamunotri and Mori plus River Tons (see pic below), one of the less known but very exciting place for camping and river rafting as written in my previous article, so you will witness yourself driving along with the Yamuna river sometimes and the beauty is tough to spell in words.
As Chakrata is a cantonment town, it has a restricted entry and exit system. You and your kids will learn many new things like army discipline and teamwork from this place. The most important thing in Chakrata is that you cannot visit or leave the town at your own wish any time. There are fixed timings for it. Chakrata has two check posts at both ends. First end is Chakrata itself and second is Kalsi, a small town again controlled by Indian Army Special Frontier Force.
The check post at Kalsi first stops all the vehicles and makes a caravan of them. Same process takes place at Chakrata at the other end. One has to register himself/herself by entering personal details in the register and pay toll. After registration and toll payment, vehicles get green signal to move every two and a half hours so if a vehicle misses the exact time period when the tollgate is open for entering, then that group of travelers have to wait for another two and a half hours before they can think of going inside. They allow around 20 minutes for one convoy to leave.
After that, the toll gates are closed for the next two hours and fifteen minutes. The last convoy leaves at 7 p.m. after which, you are only allowed to leave or enter Chakrata in the first convoy which starts next morning at 7 a.m. This rule applies to the route which goes to Dehradun through Kalsi and Vikasnagar. If you choose to take the route to Mussoorie, no such restriction is applied but as I warned you, do not even think of taking that route after dawn, as it is very risky. So it is better to reach Chakrata via Mussoorie in daytime or via Kalsi.
As Chakrata is close to Himachal Pradesh Border, a nearby place of interest is Paonta Sahib, which is a Sikh community Gurudwara on the banks of a river. You can offer your prayers to Wahe Guruji here. It is at a distance of around 53 kilometers from Chakrata by road.
Tiger Falls, Chakrata - Have your beers with your feet in chilling water
As depicted via the pictures taken on our car trip to Chakrata, one can imagine that how lovely place it is. I recommend you to visit Chakrata with friends and relatives, especially kids.
This place is very peaceful and you can enjoy the beauty of nature here.
Do not forget to visit Tiger Falls with your stock of beers, as it is an amazing experience, but be cautious as it is very easy going downhill to the fall but will take the best of your energy to climb back to your cars and the road is very steep, narrow and sometimes slippery so be cautious.
Due to little space here, I will write about how to reach Chakrata including driving directions, more pictures, accommodation options, transportation cost, food expense, and overall cost of travel to Chakrata from Delhi and Delhi to Chakrata by road in my upcoming hub, so that you can enjoy your trip to Chakrata with your friends, family, and kids and the memories will remain in your mind as precious recollections forever, as I think that Chaktra is the best summer vacation destination near Delhi.
Again, I would say there is nothing better than visiting a hill station via road, as you can enjoy the scenic beauty of mountains, rivers, and pleasant weather en route.
It is very common to see travelers standing in middle of the road, opening their shoulders wide, breathing in fresh and refreshing air, and falling in love with Mother Nature.
