Cherry Trees : a Gift

In 1937, as a gift to mark the 75th Anniversay of Victoria, British Columbia, and as a thank you for the support during the war, the Japanese Canadian community donated hundreds of ornamental cherry trees to the province’s capcital city.

These beautiful cherry trees continue to bloom today and line the streets of Victoria as a sign that spring has arrived, reminding us warmer weather and more blooming flowers are on their way.

Sign of Spring

When the ornamental cherry trees that fill the city of Victoria in the spring were received as a gift, they were dealt with very thoughtfully. The long term affect of how and where these trees were planted is a visual delight for everyone who lives and visits the city for the longest period of time possible during spring.

Planted with Purpose

The trees were planted in groups according to colour and bloom time and the affect is a spectacular display of streets filled with canopies of blossoms for the maximum time possible.

White, light pink and dark pink cherry blossoms line different streets. As you move through the city different streets are experiencing different stages of the growing cycle of the cherry trees all over the city. No two streets beside each other have the same blossom times or colours.

The effect is magnificent as you pass streets whose trees are budding, blooming and then those whose blossoms are whirling around in the wind as they gracefully fall to the earth. The life cycle of the cherry blossoms can be experienced in one day if you wander throughout the city in spring.

a Wonderful Gift

The city was very grateful for the gift of the ornamental cherry trees and for me seeing them is a reminder of the gift that came from the Japanese community. What a wonderful and lasting way to say thank you to a city.

The trees have been well cared for and maintained. They have become part of the makeup of Victoria and would be missed if gone.

These ornamental cherry trees provide a great opportunity for amazing photos. They offer an annual reminder of the promise of spring. The trees honour the Japanese community within Canada. The trees bring life, colour and brightness to the city at the perfect time of year. The trees also awaken our senses as a reminder of the constant change and opportunity new life brings.

Cherry blossoms, simply put, can brighten up anyone’s day, so I created a video to share their wonder and invite you to take a moment or two to be amazed by their beauty.

I was in Victoria one year from early January to late March, and I sure would have loved to have seen this! Alas, i spent all my spare time in the mountains and the major fishing rivers... beautiful post!
