El Medano for Tenerife windsurfers and nature walkers in the Canary Islands
International windsurfing contests
Tenerife’s El Médano is where the windsurfers gather for international contests and to enjoy their sport, but the area is also very popular with walkers and naturalists. The seaside town is a subtropical paradise for tourists in the Canary Islands who just want to go swimming or sunbathing on sandy beaches. El Médano has plenty to offer!
Situated on the extreme south coast of the island, it is also conveniently near to the Reina Sofía Airport which makes it an excellent location to get to and from for visitors to Tenerife. The Red Mountain (“Montaña Roja”), just outside El Médano, is a real landmark for the town too and can easily be seen from the runways of the airport.

El Medano's Red Mountain
This Red Mountain is a volcanic cone that overlooks the sea and is very popular with walkers who enjoy climbing up the pathway to the peak. Naturalists and botanists delight in spotting unusual flora and fauna found in the area too. Besides the mountain itself there are dunes below. The strange succulent known as Cardoncillo (Ceropegia fusca) and the Sea Spurge (Euphorbia paralias) with its milky white sap, characteristic of its family, both grow there.
La Tejita beach
Naturally the beaches are the main focus of El Médano for many holidaymakers and Playa de La Tejita is often considered one of Tenerife’s best beaches with its long expanse of sand. El Médano also has plenty of bars, restaurants and a good range of shops to delight tourists.
Of course anyone wanting to spend much time in El Médano will need to find some suitable Tenerife accommodation but fortunately there are plenty of Tenerife apartments for rental for self-catering holidays in the south of Tenerife.

Los Abrigos
Once a week, El Médano has a busy market in its main square and this is where the celebrations take place at festival times. Live music and other popular cabaret entertainment takes place at night in some of the venues in El Médano, and the resort even boasts a rock music club.
El Médano is next to the Los Abrigos fishing village and the Golf del Sur area for golfers, as well as being within easy reach by bus, taxi or car, of the resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas. With all these attractions it is hardly surprising that El Médano has become such a popular seaside town in the south of Tenerife.
