Geneva Lake Area - Destination for Chicagoans
The Chicago area comprises a population of close to 9 million people. The entire state of Wisconsin is 6 million people. The discretionary income of Chicago-ites who travel to the southern border of Wisconsin and contribute to tourism is listed by the Department of Tourism as number 6 in regards to square footage of meeting space but this doesn't tell the whole story. You see ice cream trips are a destination, a day trip, simple and fun.
Keep in mind, Door County has over 3 million visitors each year. Additionally, the Geneva Lake area which some simply call Walworth County has a strong foothold in second homes. It is the extended family and the weekend vacationers that are the foundation of tourism for this area not necessarily just hotels and lodging.
Most importantly, it isn't about lodging, it is about creating memories. Memories for family and friends often center around simple activities such as an indulgence of an ice cream cone. Let's find your perfect spot for an ice cream - come ice cream shoppe hopping with me from Williams Bay to Lake Geneva - all residing upon the beautiful waters of Geneva Lake.

Destination Geneva Lake for Ice Cream
While living in the suburbs of Chicago for many decades, I traveled to Geneva and Delavan Lake several times during the year - many a time simply for ice cream. A friend of mine, a recreational pilot, loved to fly into Lake Lawn Resort simply for an ice cream cone at Manny's. Sadly, both Manny's and Lake Lawn closed on December 6th, 2010. The good news is the Geneva Lake area continues to offer many an Illinois resorter and a Wisconsin resident with a plentiful supply of various ice cream experiences.
Geneva Lake first became popular in the 1800's. A popular retreat for hunting and fishing. Later for sailboat and regattas. The advent of the train from Chicago to the train station in Williams Bay added to the the area's popularity. After the great Chicago fire, many a north shore resident found respite on private homes on the shore of Geneva Lake.
The opening of Whiting Hotel and later the Frank Lloyd Wright Hotel..(1912-1970) further fueled the growing flurry of shopping and recreational activities.
While first a summer destination, Geneva Lake now offers many activities for the snowy season too - from fun dining to fine dining to the Dancing Horses Theater to downhill skiing to even ice skating right on Geneva Lake steps beyond the Lake Geneva Library.
The Lake Geneva Museum is a fun adventure back into time for young and old alike. Imagine walking the brick streets of Lake Geneva and seeing the retailers as they were at the turn of the century (the time frame for the museum is specifically stated as 1870 - 1930). The museum is complete with even a sport car buggy of the day - a physician's carriage that was built by Studebacker. The carriage is called a "Physician's Phaeton". The colors were very specific at the time so to alert others that a physician was available. The distinctive burgundy and green told all passerby s that a physician was "in the house" or available IF an emergency should arise. That carriage was painstakingly restored by Amish craftsman. How do I know? The carriage is owned by my husband. When I first recommended the museum he was hesitant. Upon visiting the museum, he was very pleasantly surprised. I share this story with you to encourage you and your family to visit a piece of our past. A great slice of Americana, a tribute to the entire Midwest, a remembrance of a time before "motor coaches", a remembrance of a time before computers, cell phones, air conditioning, etc.... The Lake Geneva Museum is a very special place, a great destination open May through October, with limited hours March, April, November and December.
Lake Front Pathway
The lake front pathway that spans close to 23 miles is public. Many parts of this pathway were originally used by the first residents - the Potawani Indians. The pathway remains today with private donations to provide for easier walking, however, many parts of the path remain very rugged and some are swampy. One area that has been manicured and cared for extensively is the shore line that is cared for by Carolyn Gable of Expect a Miracle. The pathway for the Expect a Miracle mansion includes a wooden walkway complete with motivational quotes and extensive gardens including whimsical figurines from Rag Thyme, a retail store located in downtown Lake Geneva.
