Lampredotto & Salsa Verde
For lovers of Florence, the Medici, and the Renaissance
Delicious Risotto con Funghi (with Porcini Mushrooms)
Spaghetti Mollica e Acciuga (Garlic and Anchovies)
BEST Cheesecake in Florence (Made on Premises)
Cozy, Cheap & Tasty.
That's the perfect way to describe Osteria Buongustai. Located in the heart of the historical center (in Dante's neighborhood) between the Piazza della Signoria and the Piazza del Duomo, this cute little eatery attracts business locals and tourists alike.
There is a daily menu, or "Menu del Giorno," that features Tuscan specialties that are currently in season. We were lucky enough to get a nice risotto ai funghi with seasonal porcini mushrooms. The risotto was al dente, but creamy and the earthy flavor of the mushrooms was a nice touch. We also ordered the spaghetti with garlic and anchovies and they managed to balance these two strong flavors quite impressively.
What really surprised me was the lampredotto (4th stomach of the cow). Not only was it very savory, it was exceptionally tender with a consistency like thinly sliced roast beef. I will admit that I found it a bit too salty, but when combined with the blandness of the traditional Tuscan bread, it was perfect. Very peppery, too (which I happen to like), so be warned if you don't care for spicy food.
Since the food and prices are so appealing, this little osteria tends to draw a daily lunch crowd. Prices range from 5,50 - 10,00 euro. Seating can be tricky after 1pm, so try to go a bit earlier. You can also enjoy a panino at the counter if you are in a rush.
What I particularly like about this eatery is that the kitchen is right up in the front and surrounded by glass, so you can see what is going on. It's nice to be able to see not only the freshness of the ingredients used, but the cleanliness of their kitchen.
By the way, they also make the BEST cheesecake in Florence- homemade on the premises daily. My husband loves their cheesecake and I have ordered entire cakes from them at an amazingly low price (under 20,00 euro!). Decadent, rich and creamy with homemade buttery crust- it will melt in your mouth. As always, thank you for reading!
Open Monday-Friday, closed weekends.
