Galiano Island - Gem of the Gulf Islands

Galiano is not like many of the other Gulf Islands, or other islands within two hours of a major city. It is a step back in time, where cell phones may or may not have reception, where only some areas of the island can have high speed internet, where you jump a ferry to do your grocery shopping, and your children take a water-taxi to their high school.

Galiano Island is small, 30 km long and 8 km wide (19x5 miles). It is located off the coast of southern British Columbia, near Vancouver Island, and not too far from Vancouver itself. It is easy to pop over to  the island for a day trip by taking BC Ferries from Vancouver Island or the mainland via the port at Tsawwassen. Galiano is separated from Saltspring Island by the Trincomali Channel.

Galiano has a population of about 1200 people, with the south end being more populated. In the south is also where you will find the ferry terminal, gas station, bakery, real estate office, an inn, pub and other shops. The north end is much less inhabited. Galiano Island is the perfect getaway, and close enough to Vancouver that it is easy to spend weekends here.

Among other things, Galiano offers hiking, camping and boating opportunities. From Provincial Parks which are accessible only by boat to the Montague Harbour Provincial Park in the south end - all easily accessible from the ferry.

Galiano is sure to provide a quiet retreat from the city life of Vancouver without taking more than an hour or two out of your day to get there.

Galiano has an Inn and a few Bed & Breakfasts to ensure you a comfortable and happy stay. There is also a provincial campsite, which takes only 10 minutes to reach from the ferry terminal.

There are also a number of properties for sale on Galiano - if you want to make it your permanent (summer) home! As well, some of these properties may be available for rental if you're looking to stay longer than a few days.
