Costa Rica is roughly the size of West Virginia and it has 112 volcanoes. But only seven of those 112 once active volcanoes are considered active. But still Costa Rica is called the land of volcanoes and some of its active volcanoes are located in some of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is very near the equator and so it is warm through out the year. Its considered a tropical country with the Caribbean sea on one side and Panama to the south. On the north is Nicaragua and on the other side to the west is the Pacific ocean.

As Costa Rica is near the equator you will find that the country has almost 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of dark almost every day of the year. It gets daylight about 6 A.M. each morning and dark each night about 6 P.M. If your used to dark coming about 9 P.M. each night in the United States in summer it will take some getting used to.

In Costa Rica you have the dry season from December to April and the wet season from May to November. You really won't find cold weather in Costa Rica. High in the mountains you may want a light jacket in the wet season.

There is one adventure you have to take if you visit Costa Rica and that is you just have to take a canopy tour. This is what it sounds like. You will find yourself flying along on a zip line through the tree tops of the rain forest. I have done it several times and to say the least it is mind blowing. Its perfectly safe and once you just let your self go and enjoy yourself you may just find that your having the adventure of a life time. One your not soon to forget.

Living And Working In Costa Rica

Are you thinking about living and working in Costa Rica. You can live very cheaply in Costa Rica compared to the United States but be prepared for a bit of a culture shock. A lot of the things available to you in the United States will not be available to you especially in the more remote areas of Costa Rica. So check ahead of time to know exactly what is and what is not available in the area where you are going.

You do not have to live in Costa Rica to own property there. You can find very reasonable property for sale in Costa Rica. You will find that property in Costa Rica is usually much cheaper than in the United States. And like in the United States houses in more remote areas will be cheaper to rent or buy than those on or near a beach.

Retire To Costa Rica

If your on disability or receive a Social Security check or other retirement benefits you can retire to Costa Rica and live much better and cheaper than you ever will in the United States. Your monthly expenses will be much cheaper in Costa Rica but some things like Digital Cable TV and high speed cable internet won't be available in much of Costa Rica. Utilities like power, water, and telephone will be much cheaper in Costa Rica than in the USA.

Start To Learn Spanish

If your going to live in Costa Rica you should start trying to learn at least basic Spanish. Once your in Costa Rica you'll be able to practice your Spanish on a regular basis. In more remote parts of Costa Rica you may find very little English spoken so you will need to know basic Spanish.

Its Time To Have A Tropical Adventure In Costa Rica

Generally Costa Rica is a very safe country but still use common sense. If you wouldn't do something back home don't do it in Costa Rica. In the larger cities in Costa Rica watch for pick pockets and don't buy illegal drugs. If your caught with illegal drugs your vacation will be extended for a very long time. Don't go into dark areas of large cities. Stay where the people are and you will be fine. Don't push your luck especially in foriegn countries where your embassy can do very little to help you.

You can travel to Costa Rica from the United States by bus or vehicle but the trip each way can take you up to three weeks so you need to plan for this. You need to bring your pass port, visa, and drivers license. Your U.S. drivers license will be honored in most of Central and South America including Costa Rica. But keep your important documents safe. Most credit cards that you can use in the United States can be used in Costa Rica. However be sure to know and understand what extra fees are going to be charged to use a ATM in Costa Rica.

You will find that almost everyone in Costa Rica will be extremely helpful to you. In the larger cities and resorts you will find that most people speak at least some English but in the back country and more remote parts of Costa Rica only Spanish will be spoken. But then is the perfect time to practice that Spanish your trying to learn.

Budget Travel Is Still Possible In Costa Rica

The easiest and cheapest way for the budget traveler to get around Costa Rica is by the public bus system. If you check into it you'll find that Costa Rica has one of the best public bus transportation systems in the world. You can get to almost anywhere in Costa Rica by bus. You will find that buses in Costa Rica have set routes and they almost always run on time.

Restaurants and Cafes that are catering to tourist can be quite high. The best thing to do is to go where the locals go. You'll find good to great food at real low rates. You will find that most towns and cities have weekend markets and in the larger cities you'll find daily markets. Most sell lots of fresh home grown fruits and vegetables. Except for in the largest tourist areas you are always best to go with bottled water. Wash your hands often and if at all possible wash any fruits or vegetables before you eat them. You may even get a chance to eat Spotted Rooster. Before you get all excited its pretty much the national dish of Costa Rica and its made from fried rice and black beans and will often contain fried eggs.

If you want to find budget lodging the best thing to do is go to Costa Rica during the off season. Most of your lower end hotels and hostels are located at the center of the city or town. Ask ahead of time if any meals are included with the price you are asked to pay for your hotel or hostel. You may be able to negotiate a deal if their not included. If you arrive in the early morning in a new city or town ask around where the lower price lodging is located. If you do find a cheap place and you want to stay for a few days to a week pay in advance but insist on a receipt for the amount paid and it should state on the receipt when you will be expected to leave. You can also ask the locals in each city or town where they go to eat. Most of the time you won't go wrong with their recommendations.

Volunteer In Costa Rica And Take A Very Low Priced Vacation

If you have professional skills like your a carpenter, a plumber, a nurse or etc you can volunteer for a project in Costa Rica and usually lodging and food will come with your volunteer job. You may end up building a school, a water treatment facility, or working in a National Park. If you plan to go this route it would be a big plus in your favor to at least have a working knowledge of Spanish. If your interested in this kind of travel opportunity check out Google for Alliances Abroad, ASVO, AsociaciĆ³n de Voluntario de Areas Protegias Silvestre, Habitat for Humanity International, Global Routes, Earth Watch, Cross-Cultural Solutions, and Amigos de las Americas. Know that most volunteer positions will require a commitment of eight weeks or longer and you will be expected to act in a professional way at all times. Many of these organizations operate all over the world sometimes in some very remote locations so be sure to check them out.

Yes You Can Work In Costa Rica

In order to work in Costa Rica you must do one of two things. You must either apply for a work permit or apply for residency. The most common job for young Americans is teaching English and this will pay $300.00 to $500.00 a month. And yes you can live on that amount but you will have to live like a native. If your retired or have another income of some type already coming in you can live well in Cost Rica. The average salary for a Costa Rica citizen is around $300.00 to $500.00 a month. A lot of Americans with a retirement income are moving to Costa Rica where they can live much better on their fixed income than they ever could back in the United States. Just be sure to visit the country several times and be sure you really do want to live in Costa Rica before you make the final move. If you choose to live in a more remote or small town in Costa Rica you will be living in a much different world than you did back in the United States. Of course you didn't have howler monkeys and jaguars living in your back yard back in Chicago did you.

There can be a bit of culture shock and you'll have to decide if you can deal with it. In the more remote areas of Costa Rica your not going to have Cable TV or Satellite TV. If your lucky you'll have a radio you can listen to. If your going to be living in a remote area you'll need a TV, DVD player, and a nice large library of DVD's to watch and enjoy.

Costa Rica Is Truly One Of The Most Amazing Places On Earth

Costa Rica is truly one of the most beautiful places on earth and until you experience it you won't believe that their could be a place this wonderful. Just recently I was riding a zip line through the tree tops of the rain forest down in Costa Rica and all I could do was think how amazing it was that I was up there in the tree tops watching all that beautiful scenery rushing by. It was truly the experience of a life time. And when I walk out on the beaches in Costa Rica it almost takes my breathe away. I don't think anyone can visit Costa Rica just one time but you can try. I hope you'll post a comment below and I want to thank you for taking the time to read another of my Hub Pages on Costa Rica. One of my favorite places on earth. Thanks for reading. I appreciate it.

I LOVE Costa Rica! This Hub had some beautiful pictures, but you missed some of the best sites! The Arenal Volcano, for one :)

But very well done, I enjoyed the pictures and content about working and volunteering. That's very valuable to the economy of the country, and god for people to get out and see the beautiful rich coast!

I would love to visit Costa Rica after reading two articles about it. Your pics are vivid and show the wondrous landscape. Many people must retire to that country. Thank you for sharing your information. I might get dizzy riding along tree tops. Great writing. Blessings. Audrey. Pinning hub.

Great pictures. I really like Costa Rica. I think with the problems in Mexico, more people are headed to Costa Rica.
