Being magically whisked away from the Delaware traffic is any traveler's wish this Thanksgiving holiday. However there is hope, a quick guide on how to bypass the Delaware Toll Booth Plaza on I-95. As long as you are willing to take a slightly scenic drive through Newark, Delaware, you can save yourself some time, some money, and maybe some road rage.

Northbound I-95

The Goal: Get to the I-95 North on-ramp at DE 896 in Delaware from Maryland. There are two exits before the Delaware Toll Plaza: Maryland 272 (Rising Sun / Northeast) and Maryland 279 (Newark DE / Elkton MD).

Directions from Maryland 272: Estimated time is about 30 minutes.Take the MD 272 exit to Rising Sun (bear to the left).Go straight on MD 272 for about 5.5 to 6 miles to MD 273 (Telegraph Rd.). Turn right on to Telegraph Rd. Stay on MD 273 for 12.5 miles. During this time MD 273 will turn into DE 273 (W. Main Street). As you enter into the City of Newark, W. Main Street merges to the right into Elkton Road (You will see the Deerpark Tavern at your left, Wonderland Records on the right and train tracks in front of you. As soon as you make the right get into the left lane and turn left on to W. Delaware Avenue. Stay in your right lane and go straight. Turn right at your 2nd light . This is 896 South (S. College Ave). There is not a sign that says it, but it is. Follow it straight for about 3 miles and you will see signs for I-95 North.

Direction from Maryland 279: Estimated time is about 15 minutes.Take the MD 279 exit to Newark, DE. You will merge onto MD 279 (Elkton Road). Go straight for about two miles to DE 4. Turn Right. Go straight on DE 4 for less than mile. Turn right on to DE 896 South. Go straight for maybe a mile. You will see signs for I-95 North.

Southbound I-95


The Goal: Get to the I-95 South on-ramp at MD 279 in Maryland from Delaware. There are three exits before the Delaware Toll Plaza: DE 7 (Christiana Mall / Stanton), DE 273 (Newark / Dover), and DE 896 .

Directions from DE 7:
Estimated time is about 25 minutes.Take the DE 7 exit to Stanton (DE 7). Go straight about a mile until Delaware Park (Christiana Hospital will be on the left). Turn left on the DE 4. Go straight on DE 4 for about 6.5 miles. Turn left onto Elkton Road. Go straight. You will see signs for I-95S.

Directions from DE 273: Estimated time is about 20 minutes. Take the DE 273 exit to Newark (DE 273). Stay in right lane and make your first right, Harmony Road. The off-ramp is also the right turn lane as you get off of I-95. Go straight on Harmony Road for about a mile until DE 4. Turn left onto DE 4. Go straight on DE 4 for about 5 miles. Turn left onto Elkton Road. Go straight. You will see signs for I-95S. straight. You will see signs for I-95S.

Directions from DE 896: Estimated time is about 15 minutes. Take DE 896 North. Go straight for about 0.5 miles and turn left on to DE 4. Go straight for about 1.5 miles. Turn left onto Elkton Road. Go straight. You will see signs for I-95S. straight. You will see signs for I-95S.

Driving up to DE this weekend from GA.....family said toll traffic a nightmare....AAA has no info on toll traffic.....your info is awesome. Thanks.
