Is There a Town Named Mianus?

Somewhere I read or heard about a town named ‘Mianus.’ I am not putting you on. Mianus is the name of the town.

‘I don’t believe it!' was my first thought. So I checked my faithful Giggle, I mean, Google, and learned it is true!

There IS a community named Mianus in the town of Greenwich, Connecticut.

Here is how Mianus got its name. The area and its river are named after Mayn Myannos, the Native American chief of the Siwanoy tribe, a band of Algonquian-speaking people.

Back in 1640, the Siwanoys sold the area they inhabited which is now known as Greenwich to the first English settlers. The price? Lots of wampum.

Note: Wampum was used as money in trading with these new white settlers. Wampum beads were usually ¼ inch long cylinders, with a hole drilled lengthwise to form a tube.

The beads came in two colors: white ones made from a large sea snail called a whelk, and dark purple ones from the quahog – a prized saltwater clam.

Back to Mianus. This community is located in a beautiful river valley at the mouth of Mianus River, a tributary of Long Island Sound.

You can reach Mianus via Interstate Highway 95 by taking Mianus River Bridge which spans Mianus River.

And there are beautiful homes for sale on Mianus Drive and Mianus Road. The children there attend Mianus Elementary School.

This community was featured on the MTV television show, “Jackass,” so the star, actor, Johnny Knoxville, could make several jokes about the town, and ask foolish questions like: “How do you get to Mianus?”

But the joke is on Johnny. The correct pronunciation of Mianus is ‘my-ann-is.’ (laughing)

Interesting name for a place and lots of information on other things, too, Drbj. I loved the explanation of wampum and remembered the term from childhood games of cowboys and Indian but never knew the details. Funny name for a town.

Rolling All Over The Floor Laughing - the souvenir mug is a classic too. Will this town feature a Mardi Gras in the future I'm predicting DrBj.

Mianus, Uranus, what difference does it make? Yes, it was funny and we will make jokes about it. I surely would hate to live there, or on Uranus.

Hi, Bill. Delighted you enjoyed this enough to be making up jokes about the name of this town. Warning - it may become an addiction. You are most welcome for the laugh; thanks for the visit and 'gibberish' comment.

Yes, my dear Faith, Mianus does exist ... in Connecticut. Touche! The planet Uranus would be a perfect home. I'll try for a higher tone with my next crazy laws post for Illinois, but after that who knows what I may discover to write about. It IS hard to top Mianus though. ;)

Happy to fill you in on wampum and other stuff, too, Peg. I doubt that I will find another community to write about with such an interesting name ... but I won't give up. I have two towns already to check out. Just a warning, mind you.

I can visualize you ROTFL, pd. Happy you enjoyed this and the mug. You make a good point, m'dear. This town would be the perfect place to feature a Mardi Gras celebration. Who knows? Your prediction may come true. :)

Hi, MizB. I would not like to live on Uranus but it might be fun to tell folks that one lived in Mianus. Do make all the jokes you like about it - that was my mission.

Hi, BlossomSB - thanks for the visit and finding this funny and interesting. My thoughts, too, y'know. It is a lovely little town - very peaceful-looking and laid back. Except for its name, of course.

So true, Nell. Mianus would be the perfect match for your town, Marlow Bottom. Do folks laugh when you tell them its name? Just wonderin'. You are very welcome for the laugh, m'dear - any time.

O my...you just have a knack for finding those names and topics that will bring a smile across my face.

You know up in Amish country in PA there are a number of towns whose name make one smile.

Hoping all is good with you Angels are headed your way ps

Delighted that I can provide you with that smile, Patricia. I do remember that PA had more than its share of towna with strange names, as does KY. I'll try to find some of them.

Thanks for the Angels - hope your weekend is blessed.

Ha ha ha ... I was thinking about the true pronunciation there and glad they don't pronounce it they way you have written LOL. I think you called Paula, Faith, up there? Tee hee

I know I can always count on you, dear heart, to bring the smiles after a long day.

Blessings always

Oh, Paula, if only I had your wit and cleverness in commenting! I am the one who is FLATTERED!!! Trust me.

Hi, Theresa aka Faith Reaper - I am working on remembering the names of lovely, loyal, clever commenters such as yourself and Paula aka fpherj48. Forgive my latest lapse. I do love you both and promise to be more diligent in the application of appropriate appellation to you both.

When I wrote this hub I was thinking to myself are the residents ever embarrassed to pronounce the name of the town they live in? Or do they simply pronounce it "My-annis" and move on.

Delighted I brought you some smiles and blessings backatcha ... Theresa.

Hi, Paula aka fpherj48. See, I am getting better already at remembering you are Paula and not Faith nee Theresa. Now if I could only remember my mobile number which I often forget since I do not call me, I would be in great shape.

And yes, you have permission to feel flattered. :)

Theresa - you also have permission to feel flattered. I am the one who is flattered by your steady attendance. Trust me.

If you lost your oar while rowing on Mianus river, would you be up s**t's creek with no paddle?

I can think of no more apt nor appropriate way to describe that event, Say Yes. Thank you for your perspicacious comment.

Isn't it funny how so many towns are named after their founders?

I looked the word "mianis' up in the Hindi dictionary. It would seem that word means 'wise' in Hindi. http://dict.hinkhoj.com/words/meaning-of-MIANIS-in...

Live and learn something new everyday. :)

Hi, Au fait. I just learned something new today from you, m'dear. So 'mianus' or 'mianis' means wise in Hindi? Who knew? Thanks for the education. Living and leaning something new every day is my goal. And so far ... so good.
