Markets in Cornwall

If you're from what we in Cornwall call "up country", and you move down here, one of the things you might notice is that Cornwall doesn't have markets, you will find very few out door markets in Cornwall. I grew up in the east of England and there were always markets. The town had a permanent market, on the market square, with striped canvas topped trestle tables selling everything from buttons to bananas. At weekends, there was usually a good weekend market going on in a nearby town. But bank holiday markets were my favourites, often held on disused airfields, the line of market stalls was sometimes up to half a mile long. Now THAT's what I call a market!

I've missed out door markets since I moved to Cornwall, so this article is to help holidaymakers, incomers and locals alike find out where the local markets are in Cornwall.

I will be looking for weekly markets, or regular markets - and locations where markets are held. I'll save farmers' markets for a separate article as I know there are a lot of these! I'm also leaving out car boot sales. This article is focussing purely on markets in Cornwall. What I'd call a proper market!

Please comment below if you know of any I've omitted!

Cornish Market World

This is an indoor market in Cornwall. Cornish Market World is to be found on the outskirts of St Austell. It's a very large, indoor market, but is only open on Saturdays and Sundays (and Wednesdays during the summer peak season).

Cornish Market World is an indoor market with over 300 stalls, making it easily the largest market in Cornwall, if not the South West.

There are hundreds of free car parking spaces at Cornish Market World.I usually park in the front car park, the first one from the roundabout, but if you drive along the road another few yards there's another huge car park at the rear.

As you approach the entrance to Cornish Market World, there are vendors outside plying their wares. There's always a large, refrigerated, meat wagon, with the trader shouting out what great value his meat packs are. You'll also find some burger/chip and sweet traders doing brisk business.

Once inside Cornish Market World, you'll find prices are very keen - and the range of goods is positively overwhelming. But I do have one tiny gripe - it's really easy to miss out whole chunks of the market due to the obscure layout. There are plans available, if you can spot them - or download a plan from their website, but you really do need to mark out the route you've travelled on the map to make sure you don't miss a thing!

The fresh Cornish veg stalls are very well priced, with a fabulous range of fresh vegetables. There's also all the usual kitchenware, bedding, clothes, car/DIY tools and shoes - but also there's a frozen food seller and a fabulous herbs and spices retailer.

Outside is Ben's Playworld - a great play area for kids to enjoy.

Market days are Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday. 9am to 5pm.

Truro Pannier Market

Truro Pannier Market is an indoor market in Truro, Cornwall, with entrances opposite the bus station and opposite Lemon Quay Plaza. This is truly an old-fashioned, indoor market, full of old fashioned style market tables, with full-time market traders plying their wares. The Pannier Market has been running for over 30 years and has more than 40 independent market traders trading from the premises.

You'll find most usual market items at Truro Pannier Market: crockery and cookwares, towels and linens, shoe repairs, haberdashery with buttons/pins/ribbons and patterns, bakeware and cookware, clothes and shoes, rugs and carpets, fresh fruit and veg, electrical goods, a butcher's, sweets, a deli, a fishmonger, mobile phone sellers, picture framers, cake decorating and baking items, mobility scooters, ice cream ... and more!

At the entrance to the Pannier Market is a very tempting pizza bakery, selling whole hot pizzas, or pizzas by the slice ... so hard to not have one every time!

Location: Back Quay, Truro, Cornwall, TR1 2LW

Opening Hours: Truro Pannier Market is open 6 days a week, from 9am-5pm. Closed on Sundays.

Lemon Quay Markets

Lemon Quay, in the heart of Truro, right outside M&S and across from the Hall for Cornwall, hosts a variety of markets in Cornwall over the year. Most of these markets are selling locally-produced, high quality items of food, photography, gifts and chocolates.

Originally, Lemon Quay was an actual quay, with ships being loaded and unloaded, but all that stopped many years ago and the whole quay was filled in and covered over.

The Lemon Quay markets tend to be more aspirational and lifestyle items, rather than down to earth cheap/bargain market goods.

Lemon Quay markets tend to be tented, so if there are white tents on the Piazza - there's probably a market!

Location: Lemon Quay, Truro, Cornwall, TR1 2LW

Market Days in Truro: There's a market on the site most days, with special events alongside during summer months and at Christmas. On Wednesdays and Saturdays it includes the Farmers' market.

Website: None. The markets put on at the Quay are by various organisations.

Lemon Street Market, Truro

Lemon Street Market is certainly an aspirational and lifestyle experience, it's not a dusty market full of bargains and trestle tables. Housed in a state of the art modern building, products range from a gallery, cafes, and independent traders selling eco-friendly and organic products, hand-made goods and artisan crafts. There's also a takeaway lunch shop, specialising in healthy eating options. There's a breadmaker, Baker Tom, serving artisan loaves and patisseries, all 100% organic. There's a silversmith and a Halzephron Herb Farm shop. The gallery contains local Cornish artworks for sale.

Approximately 12 locally-focussed, green and eco-friendly and organic businesses operate from the Lemon Street Market premises.

Lemon Street Market is over two floors and there is a lift suitable for wheelchair users.

Private and special events are also held within the building.

Opening Hours: Do you know, I have absolutely no idea. They've got a great looking website that simply doesn't tell me when they're open! Fab. So, I'll take a guess at their opening hours being Mon-Sat 9am-5pm ... if you know the true answer, leave a comment below!
