This place lets you eat, play, yoga and many more, anytime you want. So, why not visit Merdeka Walk?

Before we reveal further what this place can offer, let’s start from the simplest thing first. What is this place? Well, Merdeka Walk is in fact a place where the national independence ceremony takes place every year hence the word ‘Merdeka’ in the name which means ‘Independence’ in English. This place is situated in the city of Medan, in the province of North Sumatera, Indonesia.

Unlike other places, when you visit Merdeka Walk, you are given two places at a time. At the front of it, you get what seems to be a food center. However, don’t be fooled as it has more surprises than just food for you. Yet, at the back of it, you get a park filled with the beauty of nature amidst other attractions.

The Food Center and Its Surprises

Are you feeling hungry and could use some meals? Well, there’s no need to worry. When you walk into Merdeka Walk, that is exactly what will welcome you. Better yet, you get to choose from a vast variety of meals. If you feel like having some pizza, there’s Pizza Hut. If you feel like having dim sum, there’s Nelayan. Just for your information, Nelayan is a very well-known dim sum center in the city. Yet, if you would like to have more common meals instead, there’re lots and lots of food stands at your disposal. You can find these food stands along the way, from the moment you step into the food center till you reach the other end of it.

What will potentially give you a more unique feeling while having your meals in the food center is that you don’t always have to eat in a confined place, such as a restaurant. Instead, you can have your meals in the open air while at the same time socializing with other visitors. This way, you might get to know the community better as well as what on earth is happening. In other words, you expand your horizon of knowledge broader without you realizing it.

Internet Connection

As we are living in a connected world today, internet is no longer an option, it is a necessity. Therefore, even while you are simply putting your favorite tastes to your tongue and filling your stomach with your favorite meals, the internet is always there for you by means of 3G or Wi-Fi connectivity. All you have to do is reach out your gadgets and start connecting. Also, since Merdeka Walk is situated at the city center, poor reception is not something for you to worry about at all.

Family Time

Now, after having your meal, you may want to rest your mind and relax yourself after working all day long. At such a moment, you might as well spend some quality time with your family. Fortunately, as mentioned earlier, the food center isn’t just a food center after all, even though it may seem so at first. So, if you have children, the game center that stands among the food stands may come in handy. You and your family can try to find some amusements here, leaving all family members happy at the end of the day.

Besides the game center, there’s also a digital photo shop. So, if you find yourself in need of processing some sorts of photos, this should be your next destination, conveniently. In addition to the photo shop, you can also find some music CDs as well as movies while you shop around the food center in Merdeka Walk. Or, if you’re low on your phone credits or need to get some extra cash, there’re also automated teller machines (ATMs) available.

Live Performances or Exhibitions

The food center in Merdeka Walk is divided into two sections. In the middle of it, there’s an empty area preserved as a stage. From time to time, live performances or exhibitions are held on this particular stage. Sometimes you get to enjoy live music, sometimes you get to enjoy exhibitions – automotive, technology, you name it – while at other times you get to enjoy the launch of a new product or service. But that’s not all. There’re even times when you get to take part on the stage during competitions. What a good way to engage the local community as well as foreign visitors.

Speaking of foreign visitors, they can often be seen visiting Merdeka Walk. Well, this isn’t really a surprise, though, as this place is surrounded by a couple of hotels and resorts. The ‘Grand Aston City Hall Hotel and Resort’ and the ‘Natour Dharma Deli Hotel’ are just a few to name.

Souvenirs to Keep Your Memory Lasting

No matter what place you visit, it is always nice to bring home some souvenirs typical of that particular place. This way, you are less likely to forget what you have come across and experienced there. Every single time you glance at the souvenirs, they may remind you of your happiness and the quality time you spent with your family. They may even remind you how meaningful life could be. So, why not buy some souvenirs while you can? Don’t wait till you run short of time as you always have to come home, no matter how pleasant you find that place you’re visiting is.

The Beauty of Nature

Having visited the food center, your next destination will be the park behind it. Here at this park, your eyes will be filled with joy just looking at the pretty flowers and trees. Better yet, the trees are made even prettier by binding colorful little light bulbs around them. The lamp posts within the park also add to the beauty of the place.

Not only can you enjoy the beauty presented by the trees and flowers surrounding the park, you can also take advantage of the sports tools in the area. However, don’t expect sophisticated tools as what you’ll get are some sorts of rather traditional sports tools. Yet, this is actually what makes the tools unique. Despite traditional, they are built referencing to their sophisticated and high-tech counterparts. You can see the images I have personally taken to get a clearer picture of what I’m talking about.

The National Independence Ceremony

Right in the middle of the park, you will see a building, as shown in some of the images I captured. This is where the national independence ceremony is held every August 17. Unfortunately, as you can see, at the time I shot the images until this hub is written, the building is still under renovation in order to make it better, apparently.

Besides the building, there’s also a national monument in the park. But just as the building, the monument is being renovated as well. But don’t worry, I can still show you most parts of the monument in the images.

Do Literally Whatever You Want to Do

As I mentioned earlier in this hub, you can do a lot of things in Merdeka Walk. In fact, it seems that the only limit is your imagination. As you can see from the images, some people use this place as a place to jog. Some others simply make use of the sports tools. More interestingly, some others use it as their yoga corner. There’s also a court where you can play volleyball, badminton, or whatever you can think of, just like the people in the image who play what is called as ‘Kenchi Kicking’. ‘Kenchi Kicking’ is a game in which you kick ‘Kenchi’ – something made of chicken fur – up high into the air for as many rounds as possible. The player with the most rounds wins the game. Be wary, though, once the ‘Kenchi’ falls onto the ground, you will lose your turn and your points are reset to zero.

Well, those activities sound suitable for adults, but what about children? Fortunately, for those of you who have children, you might as well take your children to the playground in the park. Undoubtedly, your children will have some good time, too, just as you will.

My Rating

5 stars for Merdeka Walk

Right into Nature

Earlier in this hub, I mentioned that the first thing you will see is the food center when you visit this place. However, there is actually a way to skip the food center and get right into the park. This is if you come from the back door. But, if I were you, I wouldn’t skip any part of this place by coming in right through the back door, maybe except if you’ve been here for a couple of times already. Otherwise, it would be a pity to miss the surprises Merdeka Walk may have for you.
