Miss Philippines -Earth 2011: Top Five Winners Proclaimed!
Top Ten Miss Philippines-Earth Finalists
Most of my male readers crave for beautiful things, beautiful stories and a lot more regarding women. So, from time to time, with all the tragic events or malady that besieged us last week, like the controversial DEHP (Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate)or plasticizers and the E. coli virus that contaminated cucumbers from Europe.
Last night (June 5, 2011), Miss Philippines-Earth beauty pageant was held at Puerto Princessa, Palawan, considered to be the 'last frontier in the archipelago'. This peninsula facing the South China sea is famous for its exotic animals that are endemic in the country and the candidate for the Wonders of New World, the Tubbataha Reef and the underground river that the selected top 10 candidates braved to sail by boat.
A month-long selection of these ladies-for-a-cause, this Miss Earth beauties were spent visiting the forest reserves and heritage places in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao as they were trimmed down to ten. They also conducted the contest for Earth Angels, utilizing talents of selected girls who gamely participated in the young version of the contest.
And the culmination saw these beautiful girls vie for the coveted crown.
The Top 10 candidates were:
- Athena Imperial - Casiguran-Aurora
- Edan Dafilmoto - Cotabato City
- Alicia Ariosa -Pagadian City
- Muriel Orais - Cebu City
- Jonavi Quiray - Puerto Princesa City
- Tarhata Rico - Makati City
- Michelle Gavagan - Las Pinas City
- Mary Denise Toribio - Malolos City

Below is a video I've got from YouTube, showing the trimming of 50 contestants down to 10 finalists.

Highlights of the Night
The television station, ABS-CBN Channel 2 with the Carousel Productions, Inc. staged the coronation night where some alumni of the pageant served as presenters and hosts, Ginger Conejero, Sandra Seifert and John Estrada.
Online poll on Facebook declared Athena Imperial, a Mass communication student, the one who grabbed the title as Miss Philippines-Earth 2011.
Other ladies who completed the Final Five are:
- Michelle Gavagan - Las Pinas City
- Muriel Orais - Cebu City
- Jonavi Quiray - Puerto Princesa City
- Tarhata Rico - Makati City
The Casiguran lass defeated her competitors because of her objective answer regarding this final question, (as repeatedly asked by national television host John Estrada among the remaining five):
"Compared to fossil fuels, like oil and coal, nuclear power is one of the cleanest, most cost-efficient sources of energy. Do you think, the Philippines should use nuclear plants as an alternative source of energy. Why or why not?"
The titlist, Ms. Imperial clearly explained that the country is already using available alternative sources of energy: harnessing the energy of water (hydropower plants), air (giant windmills) and the sun (solar power). She also explained the consequences of using nuclear plants, like what happened in Japan, recently.
This gathered a tremendous reaction from the local crowd and supporters. Unlike the other girls who cannot hit the perfect answer for the question.
Nonetheless, they ended up as titlists of Ms. Imperial's court:
- Miss Philippines-Air was Jonavi Raisa Quiray from Puerto Princesa,
- Miss Philippines-Water was Murielle Adrienne Orais,
- Miss Philippines Fire was Michelle Gavagan and
- Miss Philippines Eco Tourism Tarhata Clio Shari Rico of Makati City.
Athena Mae Imperial, 24 years old, stands 5 feet and 6 inches and weight 115 pounds, has a vital statistics of 34-24-35. She's presently working as a researcher at GMA Channel 7., the rival station of ABS-CBN 2.
Ms. Imperial will represent the country in the Miss Earth 2011 pageant to be held in Pattaya, Thailand this coming November 12.
