Munnar an hill station in Kerala and the places to visit nearby
Munnar is a well known tourist destination and an hill station in the state of Kerala in India. Munnar is placed on the easter parts of the statewhich borders the Tamil Nadu state.Munnar is also known as the Kashmir of the south.
Kochi international airport is the nearest one to Munnar and is located at about 130 kilometers from Munnar. Munnar is set amidst the misty mountain ranges and the evergreen rainforests of the majestic western ghats at varying altitudes of 1600 meters to 1800 meters above sea level. Munnar means three rivers in the local Malayalam language as it is located at the convergence of the three rivers Nalla Thanni, Mudrapuzha and Kundala. Munnar is full of Tea and coffee plantations as well as spice and fruits.
Munnar is an ideal destination for the visiting tourists with the rolling hills, dense forests, streams and rivulets trekking trails and numerous waterfalls. Munnar is at its best any time of the year but August to March will be the best as the monsoon rains would have lessened by then. If you like to see Munnar during the monsoons it would be better for you to visit during June and July.
The Climate is very pleasant in the day time, during the winter you might need light woollens. The nights in winter will be cool and if you are planning to be out on such a day, take enough warm clothing with you. You will need them.
DTPC Boating Point at Munnar
While travelling towards Kochi / Cochin you can see the Boating point of the DTPC , District Tourism Promotion Council, at about 2 kilometers from Munnar. DTPC have arranged facilities for boating in the lake as well as cycling through the area to see the sights and mingle with people. The DTPC office also helps tourists to take part in the para gliding, mountain climbing, trekking etc. They also run conducted tour services daily.
Mattupetty Dam and the Lake
Mattupetty Dam is located at about 13 kilometers from Munnar. There is a highly specialized dairy farm , the Indo Swiss livestock project, in which, over 100 varieties of cattle are reared . The visitors are allowed to see only 3 out of the 11 sheds there. There is Mattupetty lake situated close by which is a well known picnic spot. You can also see the Kundala lake and the Kundala Tea plantations which is also scenic and wonderful place to be near Munnar. DTPC Idukki provides boating facilities for the guests, like Speed launch and other slow speed motor boats on the Mattupetty dam.
Devikulam and Sita Devi Lake
Devikulam is an idyllic hill station located at about 16 kilometers from Munnar. Devikulam has exotic flora and fauna as well as green carpeted lawns. You can find Sita Devi Lake with mineral waters and the spectacular surroundings is a good picnic spot near Munnar. You can try your hand at Trout fishing also there at the lake. If you are planning to visit the Sita Devi Lake you will have to avail prior permission from Tata Tea Ltd.
Pothamedu is a small inhabited village located at just about a kilometer from the Headworks dam. Once you reach the place you can have a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and the plantations as it is at a very high altitude. Pothamedu viewpoint is located at about 5 kilometers from Munnar and on a clear day you can even see Idukki Arch Dam located about 60 kilometers away. You can see the clouds passing over the mountains , greenish tea, coffee and spice plantations. The rolling hills here make ot an ideal trekking destination for the adventure lovers.
Eravikulam National Park
Eravikulam National park is situated the rajamalai area of the Idukki District in Kerala. The NationalPark is located at about 12 kilometers away from Munnar and is located on the way to Marayoor. The Eravikulam National Park has an area of about 97 square kilometers of rolling grasslands as well as rocky hills. The mist covered hills is compared to the snow covered Alps in its beauty. Anaimudi is the highest peak in the area and the whole park has mounts, meadows and valleys. You can find some of the rare things in this national park like Nilgiri Tahrs and the Neelakurinji flowers whoch bloom only once in 12 years. Neelakurinji flowers blooms and lasts for only a month and the whole area gets bathed in the colour.

Top Station in Munnar is a well known tourist destination which is located at about 32 kilometers from Munnar, in the Theni District along the border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The area is zvery popular for the Neelkurinji flowers which bloom once in 12 years. The Kurinjimala Sanctuary is also located very near. Top Station name was derived from the fact that it was the uppermost railway station located in the Kundala Valley. The Tea packets were used to be transported in the olden days to Kottagudi through the ropeway system here. Evden now you can see the remains of the ropeway station here.
Top Station is easily accessible from Munnar as frequent buses are run by the public transport. You can also get Cabs to go to Top station from Munnar as a day trip / excursion.
Waterfalls around Munnar
Attukal Waterfalls is located at about 9 kilometers from Munnar. The waterfalls is located between Pallivasal amd Munnar and is very ideal for long treks. This will be one of the favourite places for the trekking enthusiasts as the surrounding areas are a feast to the eyes as well as exhilarating.
Nyayamakad waterfalls is another breathtaking waterfalls, in the Munnar area, located at about 10 kilometers away between Rajamala and Munnar. The water at Nyayamakad waterfalls cascade down from a height of about 1600 meters. The surrounding areas are enchanting with the rumbling and the gurgling of the sounds ad the roar of the waters make the place an ideal picnic spot. There are long trekking trails from the area which anyone can try out if you are enthusiastic about trekking.
Lakkam Waterfalls is located at about 5 minutes drive from the Munnar Marayoor Road. The Waterfalls is located in Lakkam on the way to marayoor and is set amongst the wilderness and dense forests. Vagavurai Valley is placed in the nearby area and adds up to the beauty of the Lakkam Waterfalls. This is a perfect place for photography enthusiasts as you can get somewonderful pictures of the hills and valleys as well as the waterfalls. When the trees in the valley are in full bloom the whole of the valleys is seen in a beautiful cloud of red from the top of the hills.
Power House waterfalls cascades down 2000 meters above sea level, from a steep rock, amongst the Western Ghat ranges. This is an ideal place for a picnic while one is travelling to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady from Munnar. Powerhouse Waterfalls is situated at about 18 kilometers away from Munnar.
