Dive Bars in Napa, CA

Dive Bars in Napa, CA

One would think that since Napa, CA is at the heart of Wine Country finding a dive bar would be an easy task.  Unfortunately, it's not.

At one point in Napa's history there were many bars and each part of town had their own.  Long gone are the times of neighborhood bars and speakeasies.  Many neighborhoods petitioned them out.  What remains are three spots where locals and tourists alike go to have a few drinks and see where the night takes them.

All three of these bars have very different crowds and atmosphere.  Luckily they are all in close proximity of each other so walking or taking a cab to see them all is no big deal.

Let's take a look at each one, their crowd, and atmosphere.

Henry's is located on Main Street in Downtown Napa, across the street from Veterans Memorial park.  This bar is open evenings only and stays open until 2AM if business dictates it.

Henry's has three beers on tap, many varieties in bottles, and a full bar.

The scene here shifts over the course of the night.  Older locals come when Henry's opens, around six, and the crowd shifts towards middle age, then younger for the rest of busy evenings.  Finding a spot at the bar on Saturday nights is nearly impossible, as well as trying to move around inside the small building.

The bartenders don't put up with much, and problematic people are removed quickly.

Be prepared for long bathroom lines during busy times.

The Green Door

The Green Door is the epitome of dive bars.  This bar is located on Solano Ave. between Trancas and Lincoln.  It's very dark and dirty, and walking inside feels like a bad hangover.  With this in mind, the place is still a blast!  They have 2-3 beers on tap, many varieties in the bottle, and a full bar.

The crowd at the Green Door is predominantly locals, and there is live music a couple nights a week.

Here's the best part though, you can smoke inside!!  I'm not sure how they get away with it, but you can.

Stone's is sports bar that has a few pool tables and big screen TV's.  It's on Imola Ave. betwee Jefferson and Soscol.  The crowd here varies wildly by the sporting event on TV.

Stone's is one of the few places in Napa that has NFL Ticket.

They have many beers on tap and a full bar.  It may be a good idea to call ahead if you're heading there past midnight because they tend to close early.
