New tips to get confirmed tatkal ticket from IRCTC 2012

Read more to know tips to get confirmed tatkal ticket from IRCTC. Earlier I had published one article on tips to get tatkal ticket from Indian railway ticket booking site. Now IRCTC has again changed some rules and blocked some of such tips. But luckily some new ways have opened. But still some old tips are working. I advise you to read those tips also before starting with new tips

Tips to get tatkal ticket from Indian railway site IRCTC

There is a new way opened in confirmed tatkal booking. This is through the release of mobile version of IRCTC site. As the number of smartphones and users accessing from mobile is increasing, it was an unavoidable step. But this has opened new opportunities in tatkal booking.

Actually booking using mobile website is possible only from mobile. If you try to access mobile version of irctc in the url irctc.co.in/mobile, from desktop it will redirect to the desktop version of your site. ie. you can access mobile version of IRCTC from mobile only.

But using our tips you can use IRCTC mobile site (which is really fast) from desktop also.

Advantages of booking from mobile site of IRCTC

It is really simple version of the site, that you can load using GPRS connection in your mobile. It will be a added advantage if you have 3G ro wi-fi connectivity. Also the site does not contain any unnecessary options or advertisements. But the booking from the mobile site is limited to 5 tickets per month per account. But you can book ticket very fast, with in 6 or 7 clicks without much details filling in.

If you observe the booking process from mobile, you can see that the time consuming steps are filling details using the slow input method in mobile. Even though copy paste options are available in smartphones, still this wont be as fast as you copy in your desktop. So you can easily book ticket if you are getting mobile version of the site loaded in your desktop. But without any additional mechanisms you cannot achieve this, as if you try to load mobile version from desktop, it will redirect to the normal IRCTC site.

How to get the mobile version of IRCTC site loaded in Desktop

If you are using Mozilla Firefox or Google chrome, there are many addons to change your browser detection to mobile. ie if you use such addons, websites can detect your browser as loading from mobile only. That is you can get the mobile version of the site loaded in your Desktop.

If you are using Mozilla Firefox, a good example of user agent switching addon is 'User Agent Switcher'. In chrome also there are good User agent switching browser extensions. For example go to chrome store and search user agent switcher, there is an extension named 'User agent switcher for chrome'. Using any of these addons you can load the mobile version of the site in your Desktop.

After installing these addons you have to select the user agent as any mobile OS, for example in Mozilla firefox addon iPhone3 is available by default, you can use it. If you are using chrome there is iPhone4 or Android you can use as you like. See how to select from both in below pictures

Once you have selected user agent as any mobile OS, while loading mobile IRCTC site (https://www.irctc.co.in/mobile) from your desktop, it will not redirect you to desktop version of the site. Now everything for the booking process is ready. You just have to login using your normal IRCTC login ID. But remember that you are allowed to book only 5 tickets per month using mobile site. Booking steps are demonstrated in below pictures, using Google chrome 'User agent switcher for chrome' extension.

There is no hacking or illegal things in doing IRCTC booking in this way. We are simply booking IRCTC ticket using mobile version of IRCTC in your desktop. I agree that this is achieved by tweaking your browser. But still everything will work fine.

It will come my friend. See the screen shot. After installing the addon you have to select any mobile OS, for example iPhone 4 or iPhone 3 or Android. Then only http://www.irctc.co.in/mobile will load mobile version in your desktop

@Samir Yes for last two days they are keeping their mobile version site down for maintenance and upgradation. This you can check in the home page or irctc.co.in under the ALERTS AND UPDATES section right to the irctc login. But once the software is updated surely they will bring back the site. Most probably the wait will be over in one or two days as this is a way to get new business worth millions

Also https://www.irctc.co.in/mobile only the correct URL of mobile version. you have to use https: Sorry i made a mistake in previous comment

@birdslover :It is shown in the picture friend. Your menu bar may be hidden. Just press alt key after opening firefox. Then menu bar will be shown. From menu bar select Tools--Default User Agent--iPhone 3.0.(If you have installed the addon this option will come) Then if you are going to the URL, mobile version will be loaded.

First me also felt little difficulty in finding the option:)

Thanks for your reply, but u got it wrong, menu bar is present, but when I click on "Tools", there is no "Default User Agent" option.

you have mentioned a addon above, do i need to instal this addon to get "Default User Agent" option in firefox.

After installing addon only you can load mobile version of IRCTC site in your desktop

@Kishore : my friend, you have to select iPhone 4, not disable this. You have to change the default .

For last some days mobile site is down for maintenance. Because of that only you are getting "No data received.". Hopefully this will be rectified soon. But not sure whether the site will come back tomorrow

@Samir, Ragul :- Even though IRCTC site indicates that the site is back from 5th April, still the site is down. You can see this if you login from your mobile. So obviously you will not be able to load the site from Desktop also. Once the site is back as normally, surely you will be able to use the tricks mentioned above.

Yes Vinner you are right.Even though IRCTC has specified that the site is back to normal from 05 April, still the site is down. I tried accessing from my mobile. In my mobile also it is not loading. Once the site is back perfectly, can I expect that this trick will be working?

@Samir : Yes the restriction of 3 tickets per month is there. It is to prevent over usage of the feature.

@Shakti, Bidhan : Sorry to hear that. In some days it is working and in some days it is not working. But from outside india servers it is working, so you can try using some proxy sites also

@Manoj : Friend, you might have tried with some slow proxy sites. If your outside India, proxy sites are fast, you can book easily. Check the feedback of Ali.

@Deepak : From the feedback of many people, I understand that the server is down from Morning 8 to 10. I will check with the details. But still I think, if you are trying from outside India servers, you can get it.

Yesterday night I booked a ticket through the process you said. But today during tatkal period it did not open a single time. This IRCTC site is a sham. Its made so that only agents can book ticket.

@Rajesh : Wait for two three days and try again later. May be because many users are trying this method, site is down at that time.

@Loser :- I tried in many gateways, in those I was able to book. It is supposed to be working for ICICI bank also even if the gateway is citybank.

@Puneet- Somedays it is not working in the morning tatkal hours. so please resort other tatkal techniques also. It is there in my other hub linked at the start of this hub.

@Ramchandar- After downloading you have to set the user agent as iPhone or android. Then only mobile version will load in your browser.

@ Rupam- Please check the second picture in this hub. It is showing how to select a particular user agent using User agent switcher addon. Click on the add on icon and select iphone or android. Then your browser will behave like you are accessing websites from mobile browser. Then go to the mobile URL. Then the simple mobile version of the site will load.

@akash91- In some days only mobile version server is down in the morning. In other days it is working. That is what I understand, from user feedback. Some users are telling it is perfectly working. some others are telling in some days it is not working in the morning. Along with this you can try the other tips also.

One moot query, for everyone's information : In Mobile booking too i presume we have to log in before 8.00 am ? So therefore :

(a) just before 8.00 am, do we have to be on some other screen other than "Book Ticket / Enquiry" & only click the "Book Ticket / Enquiry" button at 8.00 am sharp, and start the process ?

OR

(b) Can we already be on the "Book Ticket / Enquiry" screen before 8.00 am sharp & fill up the Train codes etc and then at 8.00 am sharp click the "Train List" button ?

One more query : If we are doing the booking on our personal mobile or desktop , for a family member who does not have an IRCTC account, then how to get the ticket to him ? Does a copy of the ticket come to the email id registerd with IRCTC ? Does an SMS also come to the number registed with IRCTC ?

@Puneet- Only in some days their mobile server is working fine. You can try the tips of my other hub indicated in my comment just above this.

@Bosco- Selection of both Android and iphone will give the same speed only. As it is dependent only on your internet speed. Your browser session should be after railway server time 8 am. For that you have to once reload the page just after 8am. Copy of your ticket will be send to your email and also you will get SMS.

Tried from 7.35 am till 8.15 am but could not even reach login page for mobile version.

Gives This Error : Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data.

As per Puneet, who i spoke to yesterday, Mobile version starts working only after 10 am .

Nevertheless, for people with very basic mobiles who still want to use the mobile booking option , maybe when there is a time constraint, your workaround should help.

Should help AFTER 10am i mean.

Say if there is an emergency & one has to book a ticket in a hurry & rush home or rush to the station, then if they have this set-up, they can save few precious minutes.

May not be so helpful for Tatkal bookings if this morning problem persits.

It works for 1 passenger - I have tried. But for some reason if I select more than one passenger it does not proceed further, just keeps on returning to select passengers page. Weird!

@Bharat- As far as my knowledge, there is no such restriction. The only restriction is that you can book only 5 tickets per month per user from mobile user ID.

@Amresh- Just make sure that you are using an internet connection with good speed. If you are using common GPRS , during peak load time it cannot load, the site

@Shakti- It happens, but in my area using BSNL and all we can easily login even it is after 8 am. But it will be slow. But it will login.

@Manojgms- There is no particular app to download for tatkal booking. Best way is to use computer only. But if you are looking from the convenience point of view, you can use ngpay which can be used to book tatkal after 10am.

@Neha- Screen shots of using the trick in chrome is shown as screen shot.

@Nag- you can use proxy servers, But you have to find fast ones, Most of them are slow.

@Jyothy- Thanks and glad to know it is useful.

@Rajeev- MMy friend, you are telling about domains. Servers are different. For one particular domain, for example facebook.com, there will be many servers around the world. In case of IRCTC, there is many servers running parallel to support the same doming IRCTC.co.in to divide the traffic.

Wow,!!! This worked flawlessly.

I was trying since morning but the heavy traffic on the server made my 3G connection a snail and the AVAILABLE 98' status turned in to W/L 22'. But from this method at least I succeeded to book as W/L 22. This site is a shame on country's face.

@Prasanna- It seems like that. IRCTC is changing rules frequently. Recently they removed SBI internet banking from the payment page.

buy this story its misleadings the best option is go to the nearest railway statio at 9.30 am by 10 tatkal bookings are ope & you have the chances of getting a confirmed ticket

Nearest Railway station is not the best option for everybody. I haven't ever gone to any railway station to book tatkal ticket and also I have got tatkal in most of the chances I have tried. I should say it is somewhat about the experience also.

Well irctc site is so slow from 10-11:30am that nothing can be booked. Mobile site doesn't even able to open due to slow website servers.

Hi ,

I have tried the option u gave, but for me, when it comes to make payement and then i select icici bank in (mobile/netbanking) its giving me java exception error, is der anthyng you suggest that could help me on this.

I tried to book tatkal ticket through mobile, It shows the message "desktop Booking through mobile is not allowed between 8 AM to 12 PM". Please let me know how to book the tatkal ticket from mobile desktop.

very good & helpful article. Not tried yet but will try.

i found one thing, if you just trying to check if this trick works and go for booking and cancel at the payment options page, then it reduces the monthly booking quota of 5 tickets.

i am successfully installed User-Agent Switcher for Chrome and selected the mobile version and then log on to https://www.irctc.co.in/mobile

Login screen appears, when i login with my id it gives error "Booking through mobile is not allowed between 8 AM to 12 PM".

This i not working between 8 Am to 12 Pm.

please give me another tips if somebody have.

When I book ticket the status was PQWL20/WL14. What is the meaning of it ? Is my ticket is in general wait list 14 ?

@Mahe PQWL is pooled quota waiting list. It is more difficult to get confirmed compared to normal waiting list. But you seems to be in normal waiting list 14.

Managed to go to the irctc mobile website, but for every command of mine, iam getting this error below, but still it proceeds into the next step.....is this fine???....I hope it does not turn unsuccessful during the time of payment

If there is any problem in booking, is Refund possible from IRCTC if we book through this option?

Sorry the error is

ERROR: Possible problem with your *.gwt.xml module file.

The compile time user.agent value (gecko1_8) does not match the runtime user.agent value (safari). Expect more errors

@Mainish - when first logging in to mobile version of the site, initially they were asking to link mobile login with original irctc site login by entering some verification code sent to your mobile. But now I am not sure whether that step is there

@Deep - This looks like some problem with the switching addon and browser. But if the loaded site is mobile version you are good to go.
