Nags Head North Carolina On The North Carolina Outer Banks

Nags Head North Carolina is located on the North Carolina Outer Banks. The sand dunes located on Nags Head move around all the time and unfortunately there's little or nothing that can be done to stop the shifting sand dunes. Believe it or not but the shifting sand dunes over the years have buried a miniature golf course, several beach cottages, and several fences. And some day as the sand moves it will uncover things. You just never know what will suddenly appear from under the sand.

Nags Head was first discovered as a tourist resort in 1830. Today Nags Head has three yes three great fishing piers where you can test your luck at catching fish. The fishing here is usually great. Ask for help at either of the three piers and they will be glad to tell you what fish are biting and what you need to use for bait. If you like fishing you should try one of the off shore fishing trips. You'll find you can find half day and full day deep sea fishing trips. Be sure that you check them out. If you've never went off shore fishing on a boat then this is the place to give it a try. I promise you that you will not be disappointed.

In the summer months this is the perfect place for a beach lover. You'll find miles and miles of unspoiled beaches and if you go looking for sea shells when the low tide is in the very early morning around daylight you can find some real seashell treasures. If it's the right time of the year you might get lucky and see a sea turtle. Just don't approach to close. I just love to walk on the beach here near sunset and just watch the sunset as it sets. There is just a special magical feeling here that you won't find anywhere else on earth.

Fireworks are not permitted on Nags Head. With a town issued permit you can take vehicles on the beach from October 1 through April 30th but no driving on the dunes is permitted. Dogs are allowed on the beach but you must clean up after your dog and the dog must be on a leash.

You can build a fire in a pit on the beach but you must get a permit from Nags Head Fire and Rescue. Be sure you ask where they are and get a permit before you build a fire. If not you can be fined a hefty fine.

I love going to Nags Head in the fall and winter months when there are far fewer people and I can walk for miles along the beach and see very few people. Other people like the crowds of summer while I don't. I like to explore and take nature photos and late fall and winter is the perfect time for that. Winter is also a great time for flying kites.

If you live in North Carolina and you've never been to the North Carolina Outer Banks before you need to plan a trip real soon. You will never believe how very beautiful the North Carolina Outer Banks are until you visit. Its almost like taking a step back in time. I like to visit the North Carolina Outer Banks in the winter months when there are usually only a few people around. Buy yourself a kite and go fly it on the beach.

If you do go the North Carolina Outer Banks be sure to allow a few days to explore and check out the entire area. You will want to drive down to Hatteras and take the free state ferry over to Okracoke Island. It was here in the waters off Okracoke Island where the pirate Blackbeard was hunted down and killed. His head was cut off and it was reported that his body swum three times around the ship before it sunk beneath the waves and disappeared forever. Blackbeard is said to wander the island looking for his missing head.

You'll find if you like spooky ghost stories that you'll find plenty in the small little towns and villages of the North Carolina Outer Banks. I hope a trip to the North Carolina Outer Banks is in your future real soon. Don't do like I did and wait over fifty years before you visit the Outer Banks and take a few days to look around at what's around you.

Nags Head On The North Carolina Outer Banks

Early maps of the Nags Head area show sand dunes that could be seen from miles out at sea. It is said that the town got its name because pirates used to tie a lantern around the neck of an old horse and lead it up and down the beach. Sailors on ships at sea would see the light and thinking it was on a ship would approach to close to shore and wreck enabling the pirates to steal the cargo the ship was carrying.

It was around 1830 that people started coming to the area in large numbers to enjoy the beaches in the area and the sand dunes. Jockey Ridge State Park is all that is left of all the sand dunes that used to be in this area. However it is at Jockey Ridge State Park where people go to fly kites and to go hang gliding from the top of the dunes. When you see these dunes and watch people hang gliding off them you see that you are truly in a special magical place like no other place on earth.

Jockeys Ridge State Park covers 426 acres and it has the highest active sand dunes in the United States. The park is day use only and it has no camping facilities. The park is open every day of the year except Christmas day and there are no fees to enter or park at the park. The main entrance to the park is at milepost 12 on south Croatan Highway/158. You'll find nature trails and picnic areas. The outdoor bathrooms located at the park are open from the last frost of spring to the first frost of fall. No drinking water however is available and visitors are encouraged to bring their own bottled water.

Kitty Hawk Kites offers hang gliding lessons in the park and you can make arrangements to go hang gliding from the top of the sand dunes of Jockey State Park. There is also a museum at the center of the park where you can learn all kinds of things about the park including nature, the sand dunes, pirates and more. From the top of the sand dunes you can see one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world out over the sound. Scientists will tell you that the Jockey Ridge State Park and its sand dunes are about 7000 years old. If low tide is going to be in the middle of the night and there are several people in your group take everyone along and take a strong flashlight and you just may be amazed at all the great sea shells you find.
