North Texas Power Companies & Electricity Energy Plans
North Texas is Deregulated
You have the option to choose your power company in North Texas and below are a list of companies for your research on choosing a power company. Rates vary between companies and so do the sources of energy. Some power companies have choices between plans (pay month-to-month, power bill averaging, contract rates). If you are new to North Texas or just want to lower your power bills, it is worth checking out each company. Oncor is a service that will connect your electricity and read the meter, there are small fees on every bill for this, about $2.43 per month last I checked.
Also, compare sign up bonuses and other incentives for signing up. Always ask for connection fee rates and know the terms of any contract. Expect to pay an additional $5 a month or so for the convenience of month-to-month contracts. Month-to-month can be good if you don't know how long you will live in an area or if you don't know how satisfied you will be with the service. I have only listed a few of the larger providers. Additional resources are at the end with links to the electricity providers' sites.
Reliant Energy has many plans to choose from and different power sources. I typed in one zip code from the North Dallas area and found these rates in September of 2009: 8.5 - 11.9 center per kwh. This does not include taxes and fees.
The Reliant Power Tracker Plan is a month-to-month and you can cancel any time. Rates are based on natural gas prices in the market each month. The Monthly Flex ePlan is similar but based on electricity. The Wind ePlan includes 20% wind power and is a 12 month contact, and you can also get a 100% wind plan! The wind plans have a slightly higher rate but if you are eco-conscious it can be a great choice!
With American Airlines, AAdvantage frequent flyer members can earn air miles with Reliant.
Gexa energy also offers rewards for Continenal Airlines OnePass members and American Airlines AAdvantage members. To find rates, enter your zip code and find what is available.
Gexa Guaranteed 6, 12, and 24 plans lock in your rates for a set contract time. The longer your contract period, the different the rate. If current rates are low, it might be to your advantage to lock in a 6 month at a current low rate. If you do this, remember it may be higher in 6 months when you go to renew. On the other end, if you sign up for the 24 month contact and overate rates fall, you are locked in.
The Gexa Green is 100% wind energy. This plan is available for month-to-month and for 6, 12, and 24 month contracts.
TXU energy had a bad reputation a few years ago and they have changed their rates and campaigned to regain customers since.
Texas Choice 12 and 24 plans lock in your rates for one or two years. You get cash back loyalty rewards and a fixed rate. The Resident's Choice plans is online online only with a fixed rate for 12 months. This requires the setup of recurring payments automatically taken from your bank or credit card for the lock in of the low rate.
SureStart energy plan is a month-to-month plan with the monthly electricity rate posted to your bill. You pay market rates but don't have to sign up for a contract. EarthWise 12 is a fixed rate plan with a 12 month contract. 100% of the energy comes from renewable sources in Texas.
Green Mountain Energy
Green Energy is the most eco friendly company I have heard of in the area. For residential service you can choose from several plans that have less of an impact on the environment than most providers.
The Pollution Free Smart 6 plan is from wind and water with a 6 month contract, and the Pollution Free Reliable Rate is for 12 months. Cancellation fees are $150. With each plan you can see the environmental impact per year for how you save resources. You can get the Pollution Free Introduction Offer for 3 months fixed without a cancellation free.
The Pollution Free plan is from wind and water. The month-to-month has no contract but price can vary by month. Plans are also available for 100% wind energy with fixed rates in a 12 month contract or month-to-month.
