Places to see in Kerala; Bekal fort

Bekal fort is situated in Kasargod, Kerala, India.

It is the largest fort in Kasrgod district which has several other forts.

Kasargod lies at the northern end of Kerala bordering Karnataka.

The area where fort is situated was part of Tulunadu (now in Karnataka) earlier.

So we can see many Tulu and Kannada speaking residents in this area.

In fact when me and my family reached there, we were greeted by a man who spoke broken English. When he learnt that we are from Karnataka, he started speaking to us in Tulu. I had to apologize to him that we don't know to speak Tulu

Bekal fort is one of the many places to see in Kerala, God’s own country.

It is believed to be 300 plus years old and was built by the then Raja Sivappu Nayak of Bednone.

The fort changed hands over the years to Hyder Ali, Tippu Sultan and to the British.

Now the fort is maintained by the Archeological Survey of India.

Bekal is selected by the Government of India to be developed as a special tourism centre.

Spread over acres of land, this fort is a favorite location for film makers.

There is a small garden with beautful flowers and remnants of old builidngs are seen

Ananthapura temple is located in Kasargod Kerala, about four km from Kumbala. This temple is believed to be the Moolasthana(original seat) of Sri Anantha Padmanabha, Thiruvananthapuram. The idol of the deity here is made up of a compound of ayurvedic medicinal herbs and it does not need any abhisheka to mainatin it. The deity is peaceful and powerful and believed to remove all kinds of physical and mental sufferings.

Legend has it that when Vilwamangalam Swami was doing pooja here, a small boy used to come and disturb his rituals. One day Swamiyar got terribly irritated and asked the boy to move away. The boy was actually the Lord whom Vilwamangalam Swamy could not recognise. The boy got offended at Swamy’s behaviour and disppeared after telling him that if he wants to meet the Lord again, he has to go to Ananthakad, which is “Thiruvananthapuram” now.

Hi dinkan,

There are many stories about that crocodile.
