Brazil can kill. Brazil is notorious for the amount of man killing poisonous snakes and venomous spiders that can appear from anywhere. Vacations may be ruined by the death of a family member or from the loss of sight or a limb from a simple bite from a small spider, snake, or insect.
Brazil is a beautiful country with tropical rain forests and excellent beaches. Tourism is on the increase and wherever mankind invades nature, nature retaliates by sending an army of death dealing monstrosities.
Many people have simply 'disappeared' as a result of venturing to far from the beaten track. Simply walking through the local gardens can be detrimental to a persons life and health.
Below is a list of some of the most poisonous spiders in Brazil. There are also venomous snakes in Brazil and other scary and deadly creatures which lurk in the dark waiting for their next meal. It is advised that any person on vacation or holiday to Brazil takes extra care when in rural areas.
The Brazillian Wandering Spider
In 2010, the Guinness Book of Records classed this little beauty as the worlds most venomous spider. The Brazilian Wandering Spider or Armed Spider as it is also known, has a leg span of approximately 4 - 5 inches ( 13 - 15 cm ) and a small body which can be nearly 2 inches long. When agitated, this spider sits upright revealing a stripy underneath whilst the two pairs of front legs are raised ready to attack. It is one of many different venomous spiders in Brazil.
Wandering spiders are nocturnal creatures and come out once the temperatures have cooled down in the evenings. They can be found roaming the floor in parks and the forests. During the day they hide in termite mounds, under logs, or anywhere which is moist and dark, including basements, kitchen cupboards, banana trees' and even in bedrooms.
The potent neruotoxin from this spider causes paralysis and respiratory problems in its' human victims. Massive inflammation and severe pain follow immediately after the bite has injected the venom. Victims normally suffocate to death.
This spider if found throughout Brazil including Rio De Janeiro and Sao Paulo. A single Wandering Spider was blamed for the death of two children in Sao Sebastiao in one room at the same time. The spider has been known to deliver a dry bite, which is a bite with no venom, just to deter an attacker. Anti-venoms are available and if bitten, a person should seek medical attention as soon as possible or die trying. Vacations to Brazil can be excellent and fantastic if you are prepared for certain eventualities.
Brown Recluse Spider
This little beauty is only 7 - 12mm long but can pack a heft punch. Other names for this little beastie are the Violin Spider, Brown Spider, Reapers, or even Fiddlebacks. The venom injected into its' victims is classed as an extremely potent tissue destroying venom. A small bite from one of these will case severe pain and will begin to destroy the tissue surrounding the initial bite.
If left untreated, the small bite will form into a gaping wound. It is not uncommon for victims of Brown Spider bites to need skins graft on the affected areas. Very rarely, the venom is carried through the blood system to the internal organs causing systemic effects. This venomous spider is not actually a violent creature and has been known to live in large numbers in a dwelling without biting any human inhabitants. Many bites occur whilst people are getting dressed as the spider would of crawled into the clothes through the night.

Other names for this vicious snake are The Common Lancehead, Fer-de-lance, and Barba Amarilla. Found in the Northern Half Of Brazil as well as many other tropical countries. This member of the viper family has hemotoxin venom. This venom can cause nausea, loss of memory, and paralysis.
The picture on the right is after a snake bite of this poisonous snake has been left untreated. The child is waiting to have his leg amputated. The quantity of venom from the Common Lancehead snake can be injected into a victim at a yield of between 124 mg to 342 mg. It only takes 62mg to kill a fully grown human when on vacation or holiday.
The natural diet are small birds and mammals, as well as lizards and frogs. For larger mammals, such as you, they will bite their prey and stalk them until they are to weak to resist. The breeding cycle in constant, they can mate at any time of year. These are nocturnal and easily agitated snakes, very good swimmers and will easily climb trees to seek out their prey.
Never climb a tree in the dark in a tropical country when on holiday or vacation to Brazil, as this is where many snakes can be found.
The largest every recorded Common Lancehead Snake was 162 cm ( nearly 5.5 feet ) long. Coloring and patterns greatly differ and many of these snakes are confused with similar snake families. Generally they are tan, brown, yellow, orange or olive. The patterns range from very distinct blotched rectangles to just a blurred image.
The fatality rate of humans used to be very high, today there are more antidotes ready. If a victim does not receive medical attention immediately, they could be dead within a matter of minutes. If on vacation in Brazil and this snake is spotted, please, run like the wind.
The Humble Mosquito
Do not think that this is just an irritating pest. Mosquitoes infect over 300 million people every year with malaria, the disease kills one person nearly every 30 seconds. This makes the mosquito mankind's biggest killer.
Mosquitoes carry eggs for the parasite called Human Botfly. The eggs will immediately hatch whilst the mosquito feeds on the human and will enter into the skin by way of the mosquito bite hole. Once inside the skin, the Botfly larvae will develop and feed off the internal layers of skin for up to eight weeks, after this they will burrow out and drop to the floor. They are not considered dangerous, but are quite unsightly and may cause itchiness / blotches.
In the tepid and humid conditions in Brazil, the mosquito is rampant and blood thirsty. It is recommended that all tourists take along antihistamines, insect repellent, and arrange a mosquito net for over the beds at night. Thousands of tourists whom have been on vacation in Brazil return home every year with a potentially life threatening disease.
There are approximately 150 species of poisonous frogs on the globe, most seem to live in Brazil. Only three are used by natives to smear poison on there weapons to kill their enemies. Most poisonous frogs are only 1.5cm long, but can grow up to be 6 cm in length and weigh in at 2 grams. The poisons are secreted through the skin as a form of defence against would be attackers.
The Golden Tree Frog is amongst the most poisonous animal in Brazil. It has a toxin on its' skin that can kill twenty men at once. The brightly colored skins are a warning to all to stear clear. The frogs are mainly found croaking throughout the day, but can occasionally be found out at night. The poison dart frog goes by many different names such as dart poison frog, poison frog, or the poison arrow frog.
Their poisonous secretions come from the insects that they eat. These frogs bred in captivity do not secrete poisons as their rain forest diet is restricted. All people who see a brightly colored frog are advised not to try to catch it or stroke it in any way. If contact is made onto bare skin, get medical attention quickly as facing the consequences may be disastrous.
