Postojna Cave - Postojnska jama

Postojna Cave (originally Postojnska jama) is 20.570 m long cave system near the city of Postojna and is the largest in Slovenia.

Beside the main cave thera are also Magdalena Cave, Black Cave and Cave Pivka in the system. The cave was created by Pivka River, which sinks under hill Sovic and continoues underground stream to the confluence with the river Rak in Planinska cave. The new river flows again on the surface under name Unica.

Groundwater flow of Pivka has gradualy decreased it's bed in two millions years and created different floor pits. Inside the cave is Constant temperature of about 8-10 °C, so if you will visit the cave in the summer, beder prepare som warm clothing.

The maximum depth of Postojna Cave is 115 m.

Postojna cave is really famous, but nearby Skocjan caves (UNESCO World Heritage List) are probably more beautiful.

I've been there in the summer with some friends from Poland. They were simply delighted of the beauty of the cave. And yes, also becouse this was the first time for them.

    Tourism in Postojna Cave

    The Postojna Cave has had visitors allready in 13th century, what can be seen by the old wall inscriptions. In 1884 they mounted electric lighting and in 1872 rail tracks were placed on which they initially manually pushed carts with cave visitors. Now the vagons are driven by small electric train locomotives. 5.3 km of the cave is opened for the tourist visiting. Every year, the cave is visited by more than 500 000 people and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world and in Europe.

    In the last 200 years, the Cave had allready over 33 million of visitors.

    You can visit Postojna Cave every day of the year. The number and time of organised visits depends on the season. You can park your car about 500 meters away from the entrance, cash registers are located about 100 m away.

    After you purchase a ticket, you will be at a projected time transported by a small cave train to Big Mountain. The ride lasts 10 minutes. Then the visitors are assigned to language groups. At each visit Slovenian, English, Italian and German translation are available. French and Spanish is also available, but only in high season (May-September). You must check for other languages.

    After that, about one hour long walk follows through galleries - arranged tour of Postojna Cave. The entire route is without a single step, but some there are some significant slopes and descents. Along the way, visitors often stop to listen to the guide. After one hour, the path ends in the concert hall of the cave where the train ride to the exit. The concert hall has an area of 3000 cubic meters, her case may be up to 10,000 people. The hall has excellent acoustics, so there are several symphony orchestras and concerts.

    The entire visit lasts from 80 to 90 minutes. Remember, the temperature in the cave ranges between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius, therefore suitable footwear and clothing is recommendet.

    Postojna cave - how to reach

    Postojna is located on the south-west of Slovenia, close to the arithmetic intersection route between Ljubljana, Portoroz, Slovenia, Nova Gorica, Rijeka and Trieste (45 46 19 N, 14 12 43 E).
    If you're coming by car, you can drive on highway Ljubljana - Koper/Trieste (A1), exit Postojna.

    If you would like to come by train, exit in Postojna and the you have excellent bus connection between the railway station Postojna, Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle.

    Also bus connection between Postojna and Ljubljana or Postojna and Koper is very frequent.

    Postojnska jama is less than a hundred kilometers away from international airports: Airport Pučnik, Ljubljana, Portoroz Airport, Airport Ronchi FVG (I), Aerial Port Rijeka (HR).
