Private Lake Getaway

Get Away From It All

Finally. You have a weekend, a week, or maybe two. You can get away from it all. Where to go is the question. Consider a private lake.

There are private lakes that are family-owned, and by invitation only. Then there are private commercial lakes with rent able housing from modest cabins to elegant retreats. There are some private commercial lakes that have RV hook-ups; all you need to do is haul the RV along and you will be all set. The main thing is, when you think of getting away to a private lake, be sure to thoroughly understand what they do and do not offer.

Some places are furnished, but the individuals do their own cooking. Some are more of a bed and breakfast style, where they offer a place to sleep and one or more meals. Some are more geared to adults, for example, hunters. And some are family friendly. Be sure to choose a lake that is suitable for your situation.

To Fish or Not to Fish

To fish or not to fish, that is the question. Whether it is better to go to a private lake to simply relax on the shore or boat, or to go to troll the waters and cast in a line, is a decision only you can make. Again, it all depends on what you prefer. It is necessary though, to clearly know the rules, regulations, and provisions (or "no" provisions) of the locale where you plan to relax and vacation.

Do You Need Your Own Fishing Equipment?

If you are going fishing, you need to dig in and find out some specifics. Do you need to bring your own fishing equipment or is it provided? Are there size and weight limits on the fish? Of course, you will want to have your current fishing license. Do you need to bring your own bait, or can you purchase bait or lures nearby? By thinking through your vacation and everything you plan on doing, you can get these specific questions answered ahead of time. That will allow for a more enjoyable vacation.

Yes or No on Boats

If you decide to go fishing, it is necessary to find out if you need to bring your own boat, or whether one will be provided. And, if you can bring you own, you need to find out how far you will be from the landing dock, how easily available fuel is for the boat, and if there are any special requirements. For example, some boats are required to discharge all their water from live wells due to problems with invasive species possibly coming. The invasive species issue may be a reason why you cannot bring your own boat, but may have to rent one.

Different Types of Fish

Depending on where you decide to go, there will be different kinds of fish. Some popular varieties are large mouth bass, bluegills, catfish, and rainbow trout. Each of these fish live in different geographical locations, and have different habitations and feeding habits. If you have never fished for whatever type of adventure you are about to embark on, it would pay to check out forums and fishing resources so you are prepared. The better prepared you are, the more enjoyable your trip will be.

Be Your Own Guide?

Should you be your own guide on your trip? Or should you hire one? If you have never been in a specific location before, it might be a good idea to hire a local guide to lead you to the best fishing holes. Then again, maybe you don't plan on fishing, but someone local can give you a heads up on the best place, say, to hike. Plus, it's a good idea to talk to the locals about any animals, reptiles, or vegetation to watch out for, such as snakes or poison ivy or oak.

Have Fun

When you want to get away from it all, plan your trip or vacation well, and you can have fun. Not only can you have fun and a good time, but the trip can turn into a source of rest and rejuvenation. By planning properly, you can avoid situations that could potentially turn your long-awaited vacation into another version of the problems you were hoping to leave behind.
