The Royal Armouries Building in Leeds
The royal Armouries in Leeds
The museum is situated next to a sprawling river and canal system, It is many years since I have been and I expected it to be a poor photography day due to the glare from the glass on the display. I was pleasantly surprised by the photographs. I am still finding my around the Fuji S2950. The camera is not supposed to be a professional one but I have been very impressed with it. As a bonus today their was a car show in full swing at the end of the road with a vast array of very nice sports cars, I think I will put them on a separate hub.
Some stunning displays
Horse and armoured rider
The royal armouries is five stories high with lifts that service all floors. The following picture shows the open plan style of one end of the building. Each floor has an internal veranda which gives a fantastic feeling of space. Car parking is ample but changed a lot from when I was here last.
Stunning view up one end of the building
Lots to see
I assume all the articles are genuine
Truly great scenes
Great shot..Not mine..
Well time to move on to the nuts and bolts of the Royal armouries. The gun bit. Early guns were just a matter of a hollowed out steel tube, Some without even a basic stock. Pretty amazing to see how far we have come to modern guns, machine guns and unfortunately guns to kill one of our ancient relatives the Whale
More little cannons
About the Royal Armouries
The museum houses over 8,500 pieces of memorabilia relating to guns, hunting, old armour and lots more besides. Live events like jousting are a regular event and last time I was here I watched a demonstration of two participants who used pikes to knock hell out of each other. it was one of the most realistic fight scenes I have watched . The museum is situated at Clarence dock which itself is a very attractive scene with narrow boats, canal boats a plenty.
Extensive collection of canons
Collection of small ones
A couple more
Here we get to the hand gun section
Not sure if this hub will take all the pictures from the Royal Armouries. In total their are over 8,500 items in the collection and the set pieces take up a fair bit of room too. Views from the windows looking out over the narrow boats and canal cruisers makes for a perfect setting. I did not have time to visit one of the canal boats which had a conning tower on it. It was carrying German navy insignia on it. It was made to look like a German U Boat.
Collection of rifles
Blunder Bus type pistol
A few more swords
Some of the oldest guns in the world
The first guns
Showcase collection of wepons
The collection is truly staggering
Guns as art
Must take hundreds off hours to make
Old school guns
Well I had better do a section on some of the modern guns at the Royal Armouries. Guns have defined and shaped our world in so many ways. Weather mounted on ships, planes submarines or simply side arms or rifles. We have moved on from the era of the biggest guns to the smartest ones now being at the fore front of the modern armed forces.
