South Haven Or Bust

For a nice romantic summer weekend getaway, I would suggest South Haven Michigan. If you enjoy nautical settings, lighthouses, cobblestone streets, and huge Victorian homes, this is the place to be. Upon arriving at our hotel called Lake Bluff, for it sits upon a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, I felt right at home. The owners are very polite and courteous willing to give directions to all of the festivities that surround South Haven. One needs only to go to the harbor to seek fun for the entire family, but if you're like me you will save this destination for just you and your sweetheart. With its lighthouse sunsets, and wineries close by, romance is definitely in the air.

If you wish to just take it easy and munch on seafood, go to the Three Pelican Pub. Inside you will find tables covered in newspaper while buckets of jumbo shrimp simmered in a seasoned beer are being served by their courteous staff. You only need to sit outside if you wish for a little privacy. Outside you will find wrought iron tables and chairs all resting upon the pier which allows you to gaze at the waves rolling in or the boats going out, for the Three Pelicans rests right upon the harbor. Upstairs you will find fine dinning with cloth covered tables adorn with candles and favorite house wines chilling in buckets of ice.

Another great place to hit is the Idler, which is an old steamboat that rests upon the harbor waters. On the upper deck one can sit outdoors during the day allowing the sun to tan you to a golden brown, while sipping on a bloody mary waiting for your fish and chips to arrive. During the evening hours, below deck, you will find your fine dinning with wood paneled walls and white tablecloth covers. One need not look far for relaxation on the Idler; for once dinner is over you feel like stretching your arms and flexing your joints.

Before going to South Haven Michigan, look at their calendar of events. Their Venetian night is very nice. Where one can sit on a blanket with cheese, crackers, and a bottle of wine, while viewing several yachts gliding by decorated with lights and streamers. While waiting for the next boat to appear, stretch out on the blanket and star gaze, you will soon forget all about work.

For a pricier place to stay, check out the Yelton Manor Bed and Breakfast. This huge Victorian house is decorated with themed rooms, named after flowers that surround the manor. Yelton will bring you back in time with its antique anterior and wrap around porch and it’s only walking distance to town and many of the festivities. So, if you are unable to make the Valentine’s Day special due to unforeseen plans. Not to worry, make it up with a planned trip to South Heaven, oops, South Haven Michigan, this summer, and spend some alone time with your sweetheart.
