Sri Lanka's First ExpressWay

Updated on February 14, 2012

I would like to inform hubpages community that Sri lanka’s first express way opened today (27/11/2011) by president Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse. As a sri Lanka I have a little pride about this great achievement. Sri Lankan people suffered with the terrorism for 30 years. War is ended successfully 2 years ago in May 2009. After that great achievement we passed another milestone today. I think this express way will helpful for the travel and transport. This express way links our capital city: Colombo and the Sothern city; Galle. Like other roads to linking thsese two cities, you don’t need to waste for long time to reach to the destination. This 96 Km long express way will reduce your time by 3 and ½ hours. If you travel between these two cities from the Galle road which is the normal main road link these cities, you will have to spend around 5 hours. But with the new express way you can reach the destination around 1 and ½ hours.

More express ways to come

This is the first stage of this express way. But Sri Lankan government will extend this express way to Katharagama in the next stage. In the opening ceremony of this express way, president Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse said "There will be a revolution in road construction" and he said that the government plans to construct another expressway linking Colombo to the Jaffna in the north. Therefore this development will also go to the north soon, where the area affected by the terrorism for 30 years. Personally I think this is another good start for the future of sri Lankan future. Time, fuel will reduced from the express ways and it helps to a rapid development and new businesses be grown with this new express way .

Express way and Tourism

This also helps to the growth of tourism. Sometimes you may know southern province has lovely beaches. Hikkaduwa beach is the most popular beach among the tourists which is located in southern province. Galle fort is one of famous historical place located in Galle. If you are cricket lover now you can reach Galle international cricket stadium around 1 and ½ hours from Colombo. After completing the next stage, tourists can get more benefits. They can visit Mathara, Hambanthota and Katharagama cities within a short time. Sri lankan government already planned to build another express way to link Colombo and Katunayake too. After building that express way tourists can easily reach our capital city from the Katunayake International Airport. I hope the Sri Lankan government will complete these express ways within a short time.
