Stack 'em High Pancakes at The Outer Banks
Stack 'em High at Kitty Hawk
In our search for a decent place to get breakfast while visiting The Outer Banks in NC, we took a chance on Stack ‘em High Pancake House near Kitty Hawk. The layout of the restaurant makes you think you’re in a cafeteria at first, but that is not the case. You have to order from the menu, not from what you see in the food bins. The menu is written in chalk on the numerous blackboards behind the food counter. To the first-time visitor, this is overwhelming because there are lots of items from which to choose, and every item is a la carte. If people are in line behind you, you feel anxious, like you need to make a decision quickly to avoid holding up other customers. However, once you get up to the cash register you’ll see the day’s special, which most people order because it’s easier and more reasonable in price. The special that day was a short stack of three pancakes, eggs, and meat for $6.50, a very reasonable price. However, beverages ranged from $1.60 to $1.95.
Menu items include omelets, Belgian Waffles, pancakes, French toast, egg platters, biscuits, wraps, Stack ‘em specials and more. The most expensive combo was $7.75. The restaurant boasts that all the food is made from scratch.
The rustic décor in Stack ‘Em High Pancake House is suitable for the beach crowd who fill its seats. The tablecloths are blue vinyl, and they are screwed to the table. The vinyl is easy to clean but one has to guess what the need is for having the table cloths screwed to the tabletops. The walls are lined with wooden booths covered with yellow vinyl. The booth chairs are a heavy unpainted wood also.
Laugh While You Eat
What sets Stack ‘Em High Pancake House apart from others within its price range is its homage to “great literature.” The walls are covered with proverbs that either make you think or make you laugh. Two of my favorites are as follows: Habits are at first cobwebs; at last chains, and A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle.
How to Find Them
My experience at Stack ‘Em High was interesting. The food was just okay, but the restaurant itself was a hoot: the service was fast; the prices were right; and the wait staff were pleasant. If you’re in the area, give them a try. They’re located at mile post 4 in Kitty Hawk and mile post 9 at Kill Devil Hills.
