Do you need a car?

If you are a Student who just arrived in San Diego and is about to start his search for an apartment, you may ask yourself if you need a car. Yes! You do need a car! This is the only answer to this question. You will experience an increasing need for a car every day you try to survive without one. Why? Because it's almost impossible to enjoy your stay in the US without a car, especially since the alternative transportation system is time and money consuming.

Now there are different possibilities of obtaining a car. Become friends with someone who owns a car may be the easiest and cheapest way, but being dependant on someone is always uncomfortable. Another alternative can be buying a car, which may be a very good solution to this problem. A few things are to be taken into account here:

1. You need 1500-3000$ to get something convenient.

2. You have to resell the car before you leave the country, which may be stressful.

3. If you don't pay someone to get the paperwork for the insurance done, you have to do it yourself.

4. You need to have some knowledge about cars to avoid rip-offs.

Lastly, besides stealing a car, there is the option of renting a car. This is the option I chose and I will try to provide you with some information to make a good choice here.

First of all keep in mind: the older you are the cheaper it is to rent a car. The three major classifications here are: 18-20, 21-24 and 25+

Besides the age classification you can get discounts at some of the rental companies if you are a student. If you are 21 or older Enterprise or Alamo can be good options for you. In fact many rental companies provide very good prices for people at that age, but it gets tricky to find cheap companies if you are under 21. Most of the companies don't give their cars to underage students, or have incredibly higher rates. Here are the companies which I found offer the lowest rental rates for students under 21:

1. Dirt Cheap Car Rental (similar to Bargain Auto Rentals)

  • Collision Coverage (C.D.W.)
  • Liability Coverage
  • Zero Deductible
  • Free Pick Up Service Available
  • Sales Tax Included
  • No Surcharge (Over 21 years old) | Can be negotiated (I didn't get a surcharge)
  • Cash or Credit Cards Accepted
  • International License OK
  • Free Maps

2. Sunny San Diego Rentals

  • No age limitation! (No underage fee)
  • No deposit (monthly rental), only a valid credit card is needed
  • Unlimited Miles
  • Roadside Assistance
  • Sales Tax Included
  • International License OK

3. Renty

  • No age limitation! (No underage fee)
  • Valid credit card is needed
  • Unlimited Miles (extra charge)
  • Discounts on upfront payment, group discounts
  • No additional drivers fee
  • International License OK
  • Free shuttle Service for monthly renters

There may be cheaper car rental companies, but those are the ones I know, check them out and feel free to leave a comment about their service quality. I hope you find a nice car at a cheap rate!
